ove a good walk), 4yr old, 70lb, Border Collie mix. A few weeks ago, my husband’s mother passed away unexpectedly, we hoped she would integrate well with our 5-year-old rescue pup, Rosie, but unfortunately Gracie has significant resource guarding behavior toward other dogs. We’ve already worked on training, and while she responds well with people, the guarding toward Rosie has not improved enough for our home situation. Additionally, the situation is a bit more dire as we had put Rosie in daycare one day so that we could spend some dedicated time with Gracie at home, but unfortunately, Rosie was attacked by another dog while in daycare and had to receive stitches. Now, we have to keep them completely separated which has been stressful for both pups and us. Gracie is otherwise an incredibly sweet dog — potty trained, calm, well-behaved, very people-oriented, and easily redirectable. We truly believe she would thrive as the only dog in the home, or possibly in a larger home with experienced owners able to manage separation and training. We wanted to help her as much as possible, but we don’t realistically have the time, space, or resources to give her the environment she needs long-term. We also know very little about her history, as my husband had not been in contact with his mother since she adopted Gracie. She is also very fearful/reactive/aggressive at the vet, so we have struggled to get a proper examination done on her. Based on one document we found about her history, she was given a rabies shot in 2024, but she is due for another one and likely all other vaccinations. We are working with her to do some muzzle training with a med combination to hopefully get her to a point where the vet can check her without needing to be fully sedated/anesthetized. Her reactivity seems to be a result of lack of socialization/proper training rather than trauma-based. Aside from her resource guarding/reactivity at the vet, she is incredibly gentle and sweet around people. She is intelligent and adaptable. She sleeps thru the night and just lounges most of the day with her human. If we did not have another extremely anxious/fearful rescue pup, we would absolutely keep her as she is the ideal dog for a no-dog household. **** Breed: Border Collie Mix **** Pet Link: .nokillnetwork/adoption/pet_detail.php?petid=2197724&flag=1

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
