Tabasco | 5 month old Chi mix | Tiny dancer with a tender heart Tabasco is a 5-month-old Chihuahua mix weighing about 9 pounds. This sweet little guy came into foster care very scared and unsure of people, but with patience and consistency, he has already started making progress and showing more of his playful, affectionate personality. Right now, Tabasco is most comfortable approaching people on his own terms and can still get nervous when someone walks directly toward him or tries to catch him. Due to past unknown trauma, he does have a tendency to fear bite when he feels overwhelmed or unsafe. Because of this, Tabasco is not suited for a home with children of any age. He will do best with an experienced, patient adopter who understands fearful dogs—bonus points for anyone familiar with “spicy” Chihuahuas. Once he feels safe, though, he truly shines—enjoying pets, affection, toys, and chewing bones. His foster describes him as a gentle, submissive puppy who simply needs time to continue building trust and confidence. He does wonderfully with other dogs and seems to gain confidence from having canine companions around. He has also done well with cats and will sometimes try to engage them in play. Because of this, Tabasco would likely thrive in a home with another friendly dog or with someone who works from home or is around often. Tabasco is still working on potty training and currently learning to use pee pads. Leashes are still very scary for him, so he has not yet started going on walks. Because of this, Tabasco will require a home with a securely fenced yard where he can safely go outside while continuing to build confidence. Apartment living would not be a good fit for him at this time. His foster is taking things slowly and focusing first on helping him feel safe and secure before introducing leash work and walks. He does very well when left home alone and has a medium energy level overall—happy to play with squeaky toys and rope toys before settling down to relax. One of Tabasco’s cutest habits is hiding his toys around the house, and he is also known for his adorable little dance moves. His ideal adopter will be patient, understanding, and willing to let him settle in at his own pace. With time, consistency, and love, Tabasco is going to make an incredibly loyal companion. If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. If both you and the foster agree that the dog is a good fit then a meet and greet is scheduled. We require applicants' dogs to meet ours to ensure they get along. We'll ask you to read and sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee to complete the adoption when it comes time. Our adoption fees help cover the costs of saving more lives! A home visit will be scheduled within one week of your new pet going home with you. The adoption fee for this pet is $475 (includes a $50 refundable puppy training deposit). Our adoption fee covers the following: Spay/neuter Microchip DAPP vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog. Rabies vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog. Adopters shall be responsible for all vaccinations after adoption. Please fill out an adoption application by clicking here . Please give us 72 hours to review your application and respond to you. (Remember to check your spam folder for our emails!) We want our pets to go to a lifelong new home, so thank you for your patience during the adoption process! Please email dogsarrcolorado for more information, as we can't accept calls. PLEASE NOTE: The breed listed is the information we've received from the shelter. Shelters usually guess at the breed, so there is no guarantee, as we don't DNA test our foster pets. Here is some interesting info on breed identification: arrcolorado/category/puppy-dog-tips/ Our adoption process is: 1. Fill out our Adoption Application online. We'll contact you within 48 hours to answer any questions you may have about the pet. 2. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
