American Pit Bull Terrier Dogs For Adoption in Springfield, MA, USA

Dog Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). Seth is a sweet boy that loves attention more than anything. He'd love to find a home with people that will love him just as much as he loves them.

Sometimes barking and jumping are viewed as 'needy,' but these are normal forms of communication (often seeking connection with favorite humans). Dogs don't need 'corrections' or any form of punishment, instead we can help them by determining what need they are communicating, meet those needs, and reinforce what we DO like. Seth is a loving pup who will thrive with patient guidance while learning alternative ways of making requests. OTHER PETS: Seth is a very tolerant of other dogs and has had good initial greetings with others. He's comfortable and relaxed around others but doesn't engage in a ton of play them. We've learned he's also good with cats with slow introductions. We would still have any dog he was going to live with meet with him before he goes home. [Likely (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Experience with positive reinforcement or willingness to learn will help him build confidence as he decompresses in his new home. Frustrations he experiences when he's not receiving the attention he seeks can be addressed by offering enrichment, appropriate outlets, and alternative activities when he seeks connection with humans. An owner experienced with dogs who need additional patience and guidance will help him thrive in his new home. [Some Experience] KIDS: Seth can be intense with food which is normal behavior but can escalate - pets should be fed separately to avoid conflict and help them feel comfortable. Instead of removing toys, items or food, it's safest to trade up with something of equal or higher value, and will help him learn that he doesn't have to lose his favorite items. Because of this we require any people in the household to be 15 and above so these boundaries are respected and everyone is safe. [15+] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Seth's full of energy and loves to go on walks - a combination of regular exercise combined with mental enrichment such as food puzzles and scent games will help meet his needs. Seth also doesn't understand how big he is and really wants to be a lap dog, a social pup who enjoys bonding with his people. [Couch Potato / Good Walking Buddy] VETERINARY CARE: Seth would need routine veterinary care, including regular wellness visits, vaccinations, his preventatives, and dental care. [Routine] GROOMING: [Minimal} LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Positive reinforcement training will help Seth bond with his new owner, build self-confidence, and new skills and fun tricks. [Average]

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
