ss, freedom, and security,” found herself in a shelter in Georgia after being picked up as a stray. The shelter staff fell in love with her sweet nature and the way she was able to get along with other dogs her size. They reached out to ABMR to help save her life as she found herself unclaimed and on the dreaded list. Aditi is a total love. However, she was adopted in spring 2026, and introductions to the resident dog were rushed. The resident dog was aggressive with her, leaving gashes on her muzzle. Aditi became guarded. After 2 weeks, she was returned to rescue through no fault of her own. Before adoption, she happily lived with the resident dogs. She played nicely with the similarly-aged, male Malinois in the home, and she designated herself mentor to the puppy who came about 7 months after her arrival. The only time she grumbled was with the elderly, female Malinois, but they mostly ignored one another. All of this has changed since she was returned to rescue. Aditi is now suspicious of the other dogs and keeps her distance. She continues to mother and mentor the Malinois puppy. When out on walks, Aditi seems to acknowledge and then ignore other dogs to focus on her human. Because of these changes, we feel Aditi will be better suited for a home who is happy with an only dog or with a very patient person who understands very slow decompression and safe introductions with a more submissive male. Our hearts break for this change in Aditi who we lovingly refer to as “Adi Mae.” She carries her rubber chicken for emotional support, and after two months back with her foster home, is finally settling into her old self again. Aditi is house trained, eats in her crate with a voracious appetite (recommend slow feeder or placing rubber balls in her bowl to slow her down), has great house manners in that she doesn’t shred, tear, or chew inappropriately. She doesn’t mind being in her crate to eat and will even go rest, but she is not always okay with the door being closed. She is building her tolerance for this and is hovering around two hours of success. Adi loves to ride in the truck or on the Polaris, just hanging with her people. Aditi is really sneaky when it comes to affection. If you are not careful, she will attempt to make an “Aditi sandwich” by scooting between you and the back of the couch. She also loves her ball and will bring it to you for a game of fetch or happily run around the yard with it in her mouth. With that said, Aditi has a fantastic off switch when indoors or when you take a rest on a lawn chair. She is ready for affection once she knows you are her people, and she enjoys long hikes with her foster family. Aditi has been tested with a Malinois savvy child who has a double digit age, but due to some nipping for attention with new people, she will not be placed in a home with single digit kiddos. She lives on a homestead with a pony and a horse. She tends to stay clear of them, but she stares intently at the rabbits and chickens. So, small farm animals who are allowed to roam are an absolute no for this sweet girl. Aditi is located in Georgia and is ready for her real forever. Reasonable transport can be arranged for a person or family who will be patient with her as she continues to grow into her best self. Would you like to be Aditi’s next slice of bread? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
