adow? Meet Enchilada, a 6.5-pound Chihuahua mix who is living proof that "spicy" is a personality trait, not just a flavor profile. The Legend of the Vegas Outlaw Enchilada came to us from Las Vegas with a rap sheet longer than his tail. His shelter notes read like a script for an action movie: "Aggressive," "Screaming," "Thrashing." He basically treated his first vet exam like a high-stakes wrestling match. Since his "retirement" (and a much-needed dental surgery), he's traded his tough-guy act for a life of luxury, though he still requires sedation for nail trims because a man has to maintain some level of mystery and menace. The Personality: Anxiety in a Tiny Trench Coat Enchilada is high-strung, anxious, and deeply suspicious of fast movements. If you approach him like a normal human, he might get defensive. But if you approach him like you're trying not to wake a sleeping dragon, he'll melt into a submissive little puddle and beg for reassurance. Pro-Tip: If you can't find him, just start petting another dog. He will manifest out of thin air to ensure no one else is getting the affection that rightfully belongs to him. The "Spicy" Stats: The Grudge Holder: Enchilada is a selective socialite. He currently has a blood feud with his foster sister because she dared to tell him that mounting a senior Lab's leg is "inappropriate behavior." He will literally yell at her when she walks by. He's small, but his audacity is infinite. Enchilada would prefer other Chihuahuas in his home if other pups are present. The Vocalist: Enchilada doesn't just bark; he performs. His repertoire includes whines, wails, and intense vocalizations—especially during meal prep. Because of his "operatic" nature, he is not a candidate for apartments or shared walls. Your neighbors would move out within the week. The Bed Guard: He isn't exactly crate trained, but he stays on a raised bed at night because he's afraid of heights. He's basically a prisoner of his own tiny stature. The Diaper King: He's mostly house-trained but wears a "gentleman's wrap" (a diaper) at night just in case. He rarely soils it, but fashion is about safety first. Ideal Home: Enchilada is looking for a very specific kind of human—ideally a retiree or someone who works from home and understands that 6.5 pounds of dog can contain the ego of a Great Dane. No Shared Walls: Unless you want the HOA at your door. Patience: You must be okay with a dog who needs a slow "getting to know you" phase. Other Dogs: He likes having small friends to hang out with, provided they respect his "King of the Castle" vibes. Sense of Humor: Essential for when he starts a fight with a dog five times his size and then yells "Come at me, bro!" from behind your ankles. Enchilada has come a long way from his outlaw days. He's now a professional snuggler, a sun-bather, and a food enthusiast who just needs a person to tell him he's a good boy (and maybe keep him away from senior Labs). Are you ready to handle the heat? Apply to adopt Enchilada today! Dogs are not placed on a first-come first-serve basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal, applications may take up to 48 hours to complete. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
