eard that correctly. Half Beagle, half Husky - and it's not even a guess! He is what you would call 'vocally eclectic' to say the least. Sometimes we hear the clear bell like beagle tones of his mama only to be followed by the melodious crooning howl of his father's Northern roots - it's pretty cool, truth be told. Tater is currently around 35 pounds and nearly full grown. He will probably put on some muscle and fill out a bit, but he will remain a solidly midsized dog. Tater is said to be house trained and will let you know when he needs to go out. His first few days at a new home might be a little rough, but we believe this means he is going to absolutely get it in no time! Tater is crate trained and is used to being crated when he is left home alone. He loves to ride in the car (though he is not above trying to sit up front with you). He will be more than happy to come with you on vacation, to the Starbucks for a PupCup, to the woods for a long hike - you name it and he is totally down to do it. Tater has been around kids and has done fine - but until he has a little more training, we will be looking to place him with kids who are a little older and steadier on their feet as he does like to pop up to say hello occasionally. Somewhere around 6 and up. He is no kind of guard dog - this dude loves everyone and is more likely to invite a burglar in for snacks than to intimidate him into going away. Tater has lived with other dogs and, while they found him somewhat annoying, he was friendly (annoyingly friendly?) to all. He also lived with cats and they felt the same.....annoyance. Mostly this is because he is a puppy still, and they know this, accept this, and know that he will be a grown up soon! Tater IS, in fact, a bit afraid of the sweeper. He would rather be away from that terrible awful horrible dog eating machine if you do not mind! He loves toys as much as he hates the sweeper. He loves them all - but SQUEAKY ONES ARE BEST! He loves walks and has actually shown that he loves a big of a run as well - so if you are a jogger, this one might be a good run buddy! Tater is a lovely boy with a solid happy beginning. He has a wonderful temperament and is an eager learner. Yes he absolutely does need a little training help - he can't teach himself after all! Then again, training is something that we should ALL do with ALL of our dogs, REGARDLESS of age! He is on the brink of adulthood, getting to that point where the puppy and teenage puppy shenanigans are on their way out for good, and with the help of a loving family, he's hoping to become the best adult on the planet!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
