rious, a little stubborn, and full of gentle personality. He warms up to people right away and gets along with absolutely everyone—dogs, kids, and visitors alike. He enjoys affection on his own terms, wandering over for ear scratches whenever he feels like it, and spends most of his days taking naps, strolling around the yard, and “talking” to critters or neighbor dogs. As a typical hound, he’s vocal when he hears activity outside or when someone knocks on the door, so a home without shared walls is best for him. McGucket is house trained but needs frequent bathroom breaks and will have accidents if he isn’t let out in time. A fenced yard makes life much easier for him. Inside the home, he’s generally easygoing, though he will try to reach for food or tempting items within his height, and he can test baby gates if they’re not secure. He’s crate-trained with treats and settles fine once inside. His leash manners are manageable—he’ll pull if something catches his interest—but overall he’s a relaxed walker. In the car, he needs to be buckled or crated, because he’d very much like to ride in the front seat and “help” drive. Health-wise, Old Man McGucket does have some medical needs. He has an enlarged spleen and a small, irregular liver, both of which require ongoing monitoring. He is on medication for his liver, and while cancer testing came back negative, there is irregular cellular activity on both organs, so consistent veterinary follow-up is essential. Despite these challenges, he remains a gentle, steady presence who brings warmth to any home. McGucket would do well in a quiet home with a fenced yard, plenty of soft dog beds, and people who understand the stubborn-but-lovable nature of hounds. He’s happy with other pets or as an only dog. His slow, charming trots, sudden requests for pets, and calm, comforting presence make him incredibly endearing. For someone looking for a sweet, soulful companion to share peaceful days with, Old Man McGucket is truly a special dog. Dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-serve basis. We strive to find the perfect home for each animal. Applications may take up to 48 hours to process. All CAWS animals are fixed, microchipped, and vaccinated. His adoption fee is $100. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
