bly and playful little girl. She is an active girl who is always down for some fun. She loves adventure and making new friends along the way. Lassen currently weighs about 15lbs and we estimate she will be around 60lbs when fully grown. Lassen is part of our National Park Puppies. She and her siblings came into an overcrowded Central California animal shelter with their mom while they were still nursing. After a month under the shelter's care, they were at risk of euthanasia, simply due to a lack of space. We were so grateful to be able to save all the puppies and their mom (adoptable Sienna). They are all thriving in foster care and are looking for individual homes so that they can get the one-on-one training they need. Their mom looks to be an Australian shepherd/German shepherd mix and weighs about 45lbs. We don't know who their dad is, but we guess that he is a staffie mix based on what the puppies look like. Lassen is the social butterfly of the group. She definitely seems to have inherited more of her mom's herding breed traits rather than her dad's staffie couch potato genes. She is an adventurous and affectionate girl who can't wait to be your new sidekick for whatever the day brings. She would love a family that will take her on lots of adventures and keep her busy mind and body occupied with lots of fun games and playtime. Lassen is quick to win your heart with her goofy antics and big brown eyes. She is very food-motivated and smart, and would very much enjoy puppy classes to help her to continue to learn all of her basic manners. Lassen has done great living with other dogs, both big and small, and could do great with a playful dog sibling or as an only dog with lots of opportunities to socialize with other dogs. Lassen has been doing well living with dog-savvy kitties and older kids. She could be a wonderful family dog for a family with kids 7 years and older. Lassen is still working on her housetraining and will need a family committed to helping her learn. She has been doing well sleeping in a crate at night with one of her sisters and for short-periods during the day. She has never been completely alone, so she would need a family that can slowly acclimate her to being comfortable being home alone. Lassen is such a blast to be around, and she is going to make a very lucky family very happy. If you think that might be you, submit an application today! Lassen's adoption fee is $400. A pply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
