Gizmo – Chocolate Male Mix, ~5 years, 55 lbs Hi there! I’m Gizmo, and I’m currently testing the couch cushion quality at my foster home while I await my forever family. Could that be you? A little back story. I had a family, or so I thought. But I wasn’t really part of their busy lives. Five years as a backyard dog. When they finally realized they were never going to have time for me, they contacted the Defenders of the Unwanted, Lab Rescue of Fresno. New home, new life. I’m quickly learning what life indoors is like, and I love it. I’ve had a few faux pas, like eating things off the counter, but hey, I’m learning quickly what’s mine and what’s not. Foster Dad says I’m gentle, goofy, and a quick learner. I have a PhD. in cuddling and giving gentle kisses. My absolute favorite thing in the world is fetch. Eating breakfast? You can still throw the ball with your free hand! Working in the yard? Take a break and get the Chuck-it out and just try to wear me down. When your arm is tired, I’m cooling off in the water bucket, I love to splash after fetch. I’m a people pleaser. You should see me work the crowd at Farmers Market. And when you get home, my whole body wiggles with excitement. Dad says he needs shin guards my tail wags so hard. Gizmo is learning fast how to be an indoor member of the family. He has a 7 out of 10 energy level. My foster mom says I’m trying to cram 5 years of loneliness into 5 hours of attention. He gets along great with his foster brother and has met kids of all ages at Farmers Market and loves them all. He walks well on a leash, sits, and comes to his name. He uses his crate as his safe space. He’ll be great with an active family that can devote time to continued training and daily exercise (any runners out there need a partner?). If you think Gizmo might be the perfect fit for your home, or if you have questions for his foster, please fill out an adoption application on our website at: .labrescuefresno If you are interested in adopting through Labrador Retriever Rescue of Fresno, you must first fill out an Adoption Application located at our website .LabRescueFresno All dogs are spayed/neutered, up to date on age appropriate vaccines including rabies; flea/tick topical drops, heartworm tested and microchipped. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
