y flea/tick/heartworm prevention Not good with dogs; untested with cats; OK with older, respectful kids Meet Jazz: Professional Snuggler, Expert Napper, and Loyal Best Friend Jazz is a beautiful 5-year-old sweetheart whose favorite thing in the world is simply being with her people. At 60 pounds, she firmly believes she is a lap dog and she won't let her size stand in the way of living that dream! Whether she's curled up beside you on the couch or attempting to become a living, breathing weighted blanket, Jazz is happiest when she's close to the people she loves. This affectionate, low-energy girl enjoys the simple things in life: belly rubs, cozy naps, a favorite toy and a good chew bone. She's fully crate trained, knows her leash manners, and is content with short walks and leisurely adventures. While she enjoys getting out to sniff the world, she's just as happy spending the day snoozing in a sunny spot or curled up on the couch. Jazz's journey has not been an easy one. When LOVEPAWS Rescue pulled her from the shelter a couple of years ago, she was extremely sick with pneumonia and heavily pregnant. She was rushed to the emergency hospital, where she spent several days receiving treatment before settling into foster care. Just a week later, she gave birth to nine beautiful puppies and proved to be an incredible mother. After her puppies were adopted, Jazz finally had a chance to focus on healing—only to face another challenge when a routine spay surgery went terribly wrong, requiring emergency corrective surgery and months of recovery. Through it all, Jazz has remained loving, trusting, and endlessly sweet and thankfully, has been in good health since then. Her foster family quickly fell in love with her and had every intention of making her a permanent member of their family. Unfortunately, both Jazz and their resident dog prefer having their humans all to themselves, creating tension that isn't fair to either dog. Because of this, Jazz is looking for a home where she can be the only pet and enjoy all the love and attention she deserves. One of Jazz's most impressive talents is her ability to nap absolutely anywhere. She's been known to plop down and fall asleep in the middle of a walk and has even decided halfway through a hike that she'd rather be carried than continue climbing. These days, her family knows that Jazz prefers life to be short, sweet, and comfortable—just like she is. A perfect day for Jazz includes a leisurely morning cuddle session, breakfast right on schedule, a short walk (or maybe just a trip to the porch), a few treats, a brief burst of playtime, and plenty of naps in between. By evening, you'll find her snuggled next to her favorite person, softly snoring long before bedtime. If you're looking for a mellow, affectionate companion who will adore you with her whole heart, Jazz may be the perfect match. After everything she's been through, this special girl deserves a home where she can spend the rest of her days being cherished, spoiled, and loved. Interested in adopting? Of course you are! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
