ur dogs, please see HERE *VISION IMPAIRED* Age: 5 months as of 6/9/26 Weight: 36 lbs. as of 6/9/26 Location: RI This dog has been spayed/neutered, is up to date on shots, on heartworm preventative and is microchipped. Stewie Winter is a friendly handsome hunk of a puppy with a thick merle coat and a sweet, calm presence. Despite having minimal vision since birth, Stewie navigates the world with optimism and joy: he’s curious in safe spaces, playful with other social creatures, and affectionate with humans. He uses his other senses to map out his immediate environment quickly, and navigates familiar spaces easily. Understandably, Stewie is very sensitive to loud noises, especially moving noises like traffic. His world is intentionally kept small as he is learning about this big world, but h e is a smart boy and has a good amount of brave. With appropriate exposures in small doses and paired with positive reinforcement, he is building his confidence every day. Stewie is an intelligent people pleaser and wonderfully mild‑mannered. He responds well to guidance (and treats!), is calm in the crate, rides well in the car, and is doing well with house training. One of his favorite pastimes is napping, but he also enjoys romps with other social puppies and adults, as well as playing with toys on his own and training and sniffy games. Stewie is a smart boy and has learned "sit" easily, and is working on building a vocabulary that will help him navigate this world. As a young pup with limited vision, he will need an adopter who is patient and understanding, has a quiet home and lifestyle, and will advocate for his needs. He will also need continued support through all the puppy basics as well, like housetraining, crate time, leash walking, and manners. Stewie will do best in a quiet home/neighborhood with plenty of safe spaces for play (think soft edges and non-slip floors) and a consistent floor layout (without things being moved around). For these reasons, while Stewie is friendly with people of all shapes and sizes, he would likely do best living in a household with lower foot traffic, just a few resident people and no/older children. Though Stewie may be missing the gift of sight, his personality more than makes up for it. He has proven to be a resilient, gentle and affectionate pup, and he is more than ready for a home that will celebrate his bright spirit, support his visual impairment with kindness, and enjoy the affectionate companion he'll most certainly be. Stewie's Backstory: Stewie was part of the Winter litter, five pups who were born in Louisiana in early January of 2026 and were raised in a loving foster home. Medical Condition: Micropthalmia and Impaired Vision. The dog has underdeveloped and small eyes and does not appear to have much vision but he is comfortable. There isn't anything to be done to improve his vision; our primary goal is to make sure he stays comfortable. The dog may be prone to recurrence surface ocular infections (conjunctivitis) due to material getting into the space between the eye and eyelid, or curling in of the eyelids causing chronic irritation. This has not been observed, but if this becomes the case, surgery or medical therapy can be considered. No treatment is recommended at this time. An adoption donation is required for each adoption; please see HERE for more information about this. To apply for this dog, fill out an adoption application on our website: Adoption Application - SOS Animal Rescue League in Rhode Island (sosarl) **Additional info you should know - For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label. Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption. There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
