ts to yard gnomes, large rocks, and just about anything that catches her eye. She enjoys soaking up the sun and spending time outside. When she's awake, Ashley has plenty of energy and enthusiasm, but she settles down nicely for quiet naps after walks and meals. She is affectionate, loves to cuddle, gives lots of kisses, and can become a little mouthy when she's bored or wants attention. Ashley thrives on being part of the pack, enjoys staying close to her people, and will happily follow at your feet. She loves going for walks and prefers to take the lead as she explores the world around her. Energy Level? Medium to high House trained? For the most part. First thing in the morning, after meals, before bedtime, and best no more than 4 hours in between. Describe how they are on a leash? For a small breed dog like Ashley, a harness is recommended instead of relying solely on a collar, as it provides better control and helps keep her safe during walks. Ashley is curious and enthusiastic about exploring, so she would benefit from continued obedience training. She tends to dart from one interesting sight or scent to another and may try to chase small critters, making leash manners and focus work important skills for her to develop. Describe how they are with other dogs? Ashley has done well living with a 7-year-old Golden Retriever in her foster home. She is social with other dogs and comfortable sharing space, often napping near her canine companion and sometimes even touching paws. Like many dogs, she appreciates fair attention and can occasionally bicker if she feels another dog is receiving significantly more attention than she is. Overall, she enjoys canine companionship. Have they been around cats or other animals? How were they? Not yet. Commands they know? Stop, Sit working on Stay. What are their favorite things? Ashley prefers soft toys over hard toys. Her favorites are squeaky plush toys and stuffed toys that she can really sink her teeth into and carry around. She especially enjoys toys such as stuffed armadillos or plush turkey drumsticks, often happily chewing them. What do they need to work on? Ashley would benefit from continued basic obedience training, particularly with leash manners and walking etiquette. She is eager to explore and can become distracted by interesting sights, sounds, and scents during walks. She would also benefit from gradual training to build confidence when left alone, as she prefers being with her people and may need help learning to be comfortable during longer periods of separation. How are they when left alone? How long have they been left alone? Ashley currently does well when left at home for routine errands lasting approximately 1 to 2.5 hours and has not shown any issues during those absences. She is most comfortable when she has canine companionship, as she has been living with another dog in the home. Where do they sleep? Ashley sleeps in a crate (secured) at 10 or 11pm. Wake up at 5:30-6:00am. What is their ideal home? Ashley would do best with an adopter who can match her energy level and provide plenty of physical activity, mental enrichment, and companionship. While she has not been tested with small children, she can be mouthy during play and has sharp teeth, so a home without young children may be the best fit. She would also thrive in an organized, dog-proof home. Ashley is curious and likes to investigate the world with her mouth, so anything left within reach may become a toy. She has been known to chew or damage accessible items, including an earbud, the insert of a house slipper, and even a plastic bucket attached to a harness. Ashley loves being close to her people and would appreciate a comfortable spot to relax, such as a dog-friendly sofa or a cozy wingback chair that can serve as her safe retreat. After an active day of exploring and play, she's happiest curled up nearby for cuddles and a well-earned nap. The Adoption fee is $325. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
