rable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation. If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (.heartlandgsrescue) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information. Nova is a very sweet puppy who loves everyone he meets! He's sweet and gentle, and plays nicely with the other dog in his foster home. Nova eats well and will kennel right up with a treat, he barks for a minute or two, and then is very quiet and comfortable. He’s potty trained, he will whine when he needs to go out, he does sleep in the bed with his foster parents all night, and likes to spoon! He does well new dogs. He's working on some leash skills just in the house and office. He rides well in the car but sometimes drools. Loves to give kisses. He also loves to take naps! He is a chill pup who likes to sit on the couch by himself, or flop on top of foster dad for cuddles. He is very smart and sociable and likes to be close to his humans, and he also likes to get under whichever chair you are sitting in, He is the cutest, sweetest boy! Like all German Shepherds and herding breeds, Nova will thrive in a home that provides structure, consistency, training, and plenty of physical and mental activity. His ideal home will be active, committed, and experienced with GSDs or similar breeds. A canine companion would be a big bonus! Even with a fenced yard, daily walks and outings are essential to help Nova stay well-balanced, build good manners, and avoid boredom. Nova has a kind heart, a bright mind, and a sweet, mellow, affectionate personality. He’s ready to find his forever family! Adoption Details Nova’s adoption fee is $450, which helps offset veterinary expenses and allows us to continue rescuing dogs in need. We are a 100% volunteer-run organization and rely on adoption fees and donations to save lives. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
