ion, he bonds strongly with one person, but does enjoy making friends and cuddling with the "spare person" - aka foster dad. He is big on cuddles, and his favorite place is being cozied up with his foster mom. Frankie weighs about 7lbs, and could benefit from gaining a little more weight. Frankie was found as a stray and brought to our local animal shelter. No one came forward to claim him, and after a couple of weeks with little adoption interest, we were more than happy to have him come to us. He has settled in great in his foster home and can't wait to be your new best friend! Frankie is a moderate-energy pup who loves his daily walks and playing with squeaky toys, but also is a big fan of lounging around and soaking up love from his foster parents. He is definitely a little velcro dog and is happiest when he can be involved with whatever his foster mom is up to. He rides great in the car and is a perfect errands buddy. He had learned how to play fetch and has a favorite toy that he cuddles with. Frankie is still a young and learning boy and will need a family dedicated to helping him learn all of his basic manners. Frankie has done well living with other easygoing small dogs, but isn't a big fan of super rambunctious dogs. He would prefer to have his people all to himself, but could do well with dog siblings who respect his space - he has even started playing with one of his foster sisters. We haven't seen Frankie around cats, but he may do well with dog-savvy cats. We haven't seen Frankie around kids, but he may do well with kids over 10 years old. Frankie isn't housetrained and will need a family who can be patient with him while he is learning. He isn't a big fan of being home alone, so he would do best with a family that has a schedule that won't require him to be left often or for long. With time, he may be able to slowly acclimate to being home alone. Frankie may do well living in an apartment with proper exercise. Frankie is such a loving and special little guy. If he sounds like the buddy you need in your life, submit an application today! Frankie's adoption fee is $350. Apply to adopt here! form.jotform/52017002013129/ Applications are also available on the website (.yolospca) It can take up to 3-5 business days to hear back once you have submitted an application. The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes. Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
