e eyes) both survivors of Contra Costa Animal Services are stunning Siberian Husky/Australian Kelpie sisters who are approximately 1½ years old. Each weighs between 35–40 pounds and is healthy, energetic, and full of personality. Both are vaccinated, spayed and microchipped. These sweet girls are naturally shy around people indoors, but beneath their cautious nature are gentle, affectionate, and loving companions. They are curious, friendly, and non-aggressive with both dogs and cats. While they are good eaters, they prefer to dine privately and are most comfortable eating when people are not nearby. They are not particularly motivated by treats for training purposes, although they do have a few favorite treats they enjoy sharing together in the backyard, especially after a walk. Leona and Gracie are sensitive souls who startle easily with sudden movements or approaches. They take time to build trust, but once they feel safe with someone, they enjoy gentle affection and attention. They thrive with calm, patient people who respect their boundaries and allow them the space they need to feel secure. As a bonded pair, Leona and Gracie are happiest when together. Whether they're relaxing on their dog bed indoors, exploring their secure fenced yard, or heading out on an adventure, they find comfort and confidence in each other's company. Watching them play together is a joy—they are full of energy, husky antics, and sisterly fun. Daily walks are the highlight of their lives. The moment they realize it's time to go, they become animated, vocal, and excited. On walks, they truly shine. They walk well on leash, are easy to guide, and love exploring new sights, smells, routes, and environments. They are intelligent, curious dogs who thrive on outdoor stimulation and exercise. Regular daily walks are essential to their happiness and well-being. Because of their strong prey drive and independent husky nature, Leona and Gracie should not be considered off-leash dogs. At this time, neither reliably responds to voice recall or commands when distracted. Since entering foster care, both sisters have continued to make steady progress and gain confidence. They would do best in a quiet, calm home with a securely fenced yard and a family willing to provide patience, kindness, consistency, and understanding. In their foster home, they have a designated quiet space where they feel safe and can relax or nap when needed. A home with younger children would likely not be the best fit, as a busy household could increase their anxiety. Instead, they would flourish in a peaceful environment where they can continue building trust at their own pace. Leona and Gracie are truly special dogs. Their foster family adores their unique personalities, endless husky quirks, and the laughter they bring every day. They are inseparable sisters who are looking for a forever home willing to embrace them exactly as they are—a loving, devoted pair ready to share a lifetime of adventures together. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
