Description

Chihuahua-Unknown Mix Dogs For Adoption in Brooklyn Center, MN, USA

Dog Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). Hi, I’m Maggie. I’m a 2 year old chihuahua mix! I came to MN from Mexico, where I was found living in a hole inside a rock mountain. Whe

n I got to MN my foster mom realized I was limping quite a bit. It was then determined by our vets that I needed a double back knee surgery as I had luxating patella in both my back knees. Don’t worry, my foster momma did all the hard work and I feel so much better now and am like a brand new dog! I have come a long way in adjusting to indoor family life, and have learned so much! It will take me a few minutes before I’ll let my guard down, but once I learn you wanna be my friend we will be best friends. I am goofy and will play with other dogs big or small, but it may take me a few days to warm up to them. I’m not a big fan of active young puppies that always want to invade my space. But I do great with older, mellower dogs or dogs that just leave me alone. I’m great with cats and have even interacted with a few chickens. I do have a strong interest in rabbits and will attempt to chase them whenever I see one. The thrill wears off after about three seconds, and I go back about my business. Some of my favorite things to do are: go for car rides, or boat rides, lie in the sun (or under a blanket, if it’s cold out), play with a rubber ball (I can toss it, chase it and catch it all by myself!) and on occasion I like to play wrestling with my foster sibling who is close to my size. When we hear our foster dad start up the four-wheeler, we both run to it because he lets us hang out in an attached basket and cruise around with him. It’s really fun! I also love treat time, and will do anything for a soft treat, like Beggin Strips. When I am in cuddle mode, I don’t like to share my space with other animals and may growl at them if they disturb my sleep. I love cuddles, I am the most cuddly girl ever. I would rather curl up and cuddle with you under a blanket all day long. At night, I sleep with my foster, burrowed deep under the blankets and don’t make a peep until long after everyone else is up. I am kennel trained and do really enjoy hanging in my kennel, but my foster has been letting me free roam all over the house and I’ve been really good. Most of the time, I just hang out on the couch until it’s time to go outside or grab a snack. I am officially 99.99% potty trained, although when I go to a new home I might have an accident or two while we learn to communicate with each other. I will bark at new people coming into the house but will calm down once I notice the other dogs are ok with them. If they are too intrusive or in my face too much at our initial meeting I may growl. I never snap or bite though. I just need some extra time to learn new people are okay! Anyways do you think you could be my forever home?? Adoption fee includes: Full veterinary exam, Alter, Prepaid microchip, Dewormed, Rabies vaccine (if age appropriate), Distemper combo vaccine(s) appropriate to age, Bordetella vaccine, 4DX (over 6 months of age), Flea/tick and heartworm preventative while in rescue. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
