Wilson is now safe in foster care and looking for an active forever family that can keep up with his zest for life. Wilson is everything people love about puppies - playful, curious, affectionate, and full of personality. He approaches every day with enthusiasm and excitement and is always ready for his next adventure. His foster mom describes him as incredibly smart, very entertaining, and definitely a bit of a handful in the way that only adolescent puppies can be. Wilson is a high-energy pup. He loves to play, explore, and stay busy. Because of this, we strongly feel he would thrive in a home with another young, playful dog who can help burn off some of that energy. He loves canine companionship and would enjoy having a buddy to wrestle, chase, and play with. As far as his house manners, he is making good progress with housetraining. Early on, he showed some excited or submissive urination, but this has improved significantly in foster care. He is crate-trained and keeps his crate clean when his foster parents are out of the home. While he may protest for a few minutes when first crated, he settles down and relaxes once he realizes it's time to rest. On walks, Wilson is generally well-behaved and enjoys exploring the world around him. He can be a little unsure when meeting new dogs and may need a moment to warm up, but he gains confidence quickly and looks to his people for reassurance. Like many adolescent dogs, Wilson is still learning what belongs to him and what doesn't. If left unattended, he'll happily investigate coffee tables, towels, clothing, and anything else that looks interesting. In Wilson's mind, everything is a toy. The good news is that he's very smart and responds well to correction and guidance. This type of behavior is very normal for a 7- to 8-month-old puppy and will continue to improve with training, structure, and maturity. Once he's had plenty of exercise and playtime, Wilson reveals his softer side. He loves to snuggle, enjoys burrowing under blankets, and is more than happy to curl up next to his favorite people. Despite his busy nature, he's a small dog who enjoys affection and wants to be part of the family. Wilson is looking for adopters who understand puppy behavior and are ready to provide structure, training, exercise, and plenty of opportunities for play. In return, he'll bring energy, laughter, companionship, and endless entertainment to your home. If you're looking for a fun-loving young dog with a big personality and an even bigger heart, Wilson may be the perfect addition to your family. We need a foster or an adopter to bring Wilson to town. Foster-to-adopt is an option, too! Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
