in Tonopah that we have been helping for a few years. Both pups were very shy and under-socialized, so we are helping to socialize them while they wait for their forever families to find them. Pepper is still pretty shy with new people, but he has made great progress so far and we have no doubt he will fully blossom in his forever home. Pepper will avoid the humans by zooming away, but he has started to shyly approach to lick our hand. If you corner him, he will allow you to pick him up and hold/pet him. Pepper will need time to adjust in his new home and a very secure environment (fenced yard, no apartments) as he is a flight-risk. Pepper is shy but he LOVES to play and gets really excited when other dogs are around. We feel Pepper would do best in a home with another dog who can help him get comfortable faster in his new home. Pepper loves to zoom and play and has the cutest little bunny-hops when he's excited. He especially loves to play with his bro, Salt. Pepper and Salt don't have to be adopted together, but if you're looking for a duo, these two go great together like, well, salt and pepper! ;-) Remember that while puppies are cute, they are also work! Please make sure you are ready for the commitment of adopting a young dog. Puppies become adult dogs and are meant to be loved for their whole life, not just until they grow up. Puppies will need lots of patience to help them learn their best doggy manners, leash-training, and house-training. Adoption fees are $500 per puppy and include vaccinations, microchip, and eventual alter surgery at the PAWS clinic on Cave Creek Road in Phoenix. Per our vet, we do not alter puppies until around five months, which helps with hormone development and bone growth. Adopters will sign a contract that you will bring Pepper to the PAWS clinic for neuter surgery, sometime in July 2026. Email us at chitownrescuegmail for more information/meet and greet appointment!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
