require an approved Best Friend Pet Adoption application before you can be considered or meet any of our dogs. The link to our application is in the dogs bio below. Meet Lyla: A Gentle Soul Looking for Her Perfect Match At four years old, Lyla has all the wonderful qualities that make adult dogs so special. She's house-trained, crate-trained, knows her manners, walks beautifully on a leash, and is ready to settle into a forever home where she can truly relax and be loved. Lyla came into rescue with a little extra caution in her heart. When meeting someone new, she may offer a bark or two and take a few steps back. It's simply her way of saying, "Give me a minute.” Just a sensitive girl who likes to get to know people at her own pace. Once she feels safe, though, Lyla transforms into a devoted companion who loves nothing more than being close to her people with snuggles and soaking up affection. One of Lyla's greatest strengths is how well she gets along with other animals. She loves other dogs and has done wonderfully around cats, often paying them little attention. In fact, having another confident dog in the home helps Lyla shine and be a happier more relaxed dog. A canine friend gives her reassurance, helps build her confidence, and encourages her to embrace new experiences with a little more bravery. Lyla has also been around children, but because she can be cautious in new situations, she would thrive best in a calm household with older children or adults who understand that trust is something earned, not rushed. A peaceful environment will allow her sweet personality to blossom. Her foster family describes her as an absolute dream in the home. She is fully housebroken, comfortable in her crate, and knows commands such as sit, come, and place. She isn't a big barker and generally takes life in stride. While she'd love a family that works from home, she can also do well during a normal workday, especially if she has a furry companion to keep her company. You won't need a fenced yard for Lyla, either. She walks so beautifully on a leash that daily walks and outings provide all the exercise and enrichment she needs. Why adopt Lyla? Because beneath her initial shyness is a loyal, loving dog with a heart of gold. She has already done so much hard work learning to trust, and she deserves a family willing to give her the patience and understanding she needs. In return, you'll gain a devoted best friend whose love feels truly earned. Lyla is the perfect size, the perfect soul, and she's patiently waiting for the perfect home. Could it be yours? 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
