Description

Chug Dogs For Adoption in Springdale, PA, USA

Dog Breed: Pug / Chihuahua / Mixed. Hi! I'm Caramel! I came to Pittsburgh from an over populated shelter in West Virginia. I am so much happier in my foster's home than the shelter. I

am close to two years old and I'm sure I'm a multitude of dog breeds, but the shelter is calling me a pug and a chihuahua. I am quite muscular though, so I think maybe my great grandfather had a mix of pitbull or shar pei. I am small, strong, and compact. I have such a curly tail, soft fur, a beautiful smile, and some face wrinkles! I am almost two years old and full of energy where I like to play fetch but also am quite content sitting on the couch with you. I am fully house broken but am kept safe in a crate when my foster family leaves the house. Once I find my perfect home, I will be a loyal and strong housemate. I like to act like I own the house, I mean, I do own the house, don't I? If someone I don't know enters my home, I will bark. I will let them know this is my house until I trust them. I'm not aggressive, I just like people to know they aren't welcome until I say so. I need to protect my family because I've been bounced around enough these last few months. My foster mom keeps saying I'm trainable and I'm not sure what that means, but I think it means I get all the treats I want so please, don't hold those back. I love walks and get really excited when I see you grab my leash. I love to sleep under the blankets, so please don't expect your bed to remain made if you let me in your bedroom (please let me be in your bedroom!). I might be fine with another sibling, but I've been a little jealous when other dogs are getting my foster mom's attention or if they get too close to my toys, so I'm looking for a place of my own or with someone who has another dog my size and can help curb my resource guarding. A peaceful house without children running around and not too many visitors would be ideal. If you think you fit my lifestyle, please put your app in! Caramel is now available for adoption though Paws Across Pittsburgh, Springdale, PA KL# 16182

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
