die can become very anxious when separated from family for too long. Eddie is very sweet and loves physical affection and attention. He thrives on praise. Eddie loves meeting new people and is very friendly to adults and elementary age children and older. He does not have a lot of experience with babies and they seem to give him some anxiety and negative behaviors. Eddie does not mind strangers coming in and out of the home or being approached by them on or off leash. When it comes to other dogs, Eddie is very friendly—he loves to play at the park with them walk with them and make new friends. Eddie does have issues guarding and being aggressive when it comes to sharing toys and bones/rewards. Eddie should not have access to toys or bones with other dogs, and he occasionally shows food aggression, but has mostly been trained out of this as long as he has his own space to eat. Eddie has never met cats, so we are not sure what his reaction would be. When it comes to prey drive, Eddie has natural hunting instincts and loves to walk with his nose pressed to the ground and point when he senses bunnies and squirrels. Eddie is potty trained and has only had accidents if he was sick. Eddie is a very curious dog and can do great left alone out of the kennel if there are not things for him to get into. In the kennel, Eddie needs a strong kennel as he can become very anxious and try to dig/be destructive from anxiety. He likes to occasionally dig at the dog park, but he is very responsive to commands. Eddie knows all his basic commands: sit, lay down, wait, no, stay, go ahead. He pulls on leash when walking in new unfamiliar places, but with routine he is great. Eddie does great with praise and treats as training tools. Eddie has only ever shown aggression with toys, food, bones, and now recently our new born. It seems to come from unfamiliarity and anxiety. Currently Eddie eats once a day in the evenings, he goes for walks to the dog park twice a day and plays with other dogs, and sleeps/spends other time in his kennel due to risks with his recent behavior toward our newborn. Prior to that, he would hangout outside of his kennel as long as we were home, and was trained to know which dog bed was his. **** Breed: Mixed **** Pet Link: .nokillnetwork/adoption/pet_detail.php?petid=2199933&flag=1

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
