ge: 5 years Weight: 13lbs House-Trained: In progress Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes (would love a dog sibling) Good with Cats: Not tested (likely okay) Good with Kids: Best with older, calm children Energy Level: Low Fence Required: Preferred but not required Special Traits: Professional cuddler, blanket burrower, food motivated, leash trained Location: Chinquapin, NC Why You’ll Love Kong: Ultimate lap dog and cuddle companion Loves sleeping under blankets with his people Low-energy and easygoing Gets along wonderfully with other dogs Non-destructive when left alone Stays close by when outdoors About Kong’s Breed: Chiweenies combine the loyalty of a Chihuahua with the devotion and charm of a Dachshund. These little dogs are often deeply attached to their people and thrive when they are included in daily life. They tend to be affectionate companions who enjoy both lounging and spending time with their favorite humans. Kong’s Story & Personality: Kong is a sweet little guy whose favorite things in life are soft blankets, cozy laps, and being close to his people. He loves snuggling under the covers at bedtime and would be thrilled to find a home with plenty of room in the bed for him to curl up beside you. He can be a little skittish when meeting new people, but with a few treats, some gentle pets, and a little patience, he warms up quickly and becomes a loving, devoted companion. Once he feels safe, his affectionate personality shines through. Kong is crate trained and can be left home without a crate, as he is non-destructive. However, he does prefer having people around and may bark when left home alone for extended periods. Because of this, he would do best with someone who is home frequently, such as a retiree, remote worker, or adult household with a flexible schedule. He gets along great with other dogs and would especially enjoy having a canine companion, although it isn't required. While he has not been cat tested, his gentle, low-energy personality suggests he may do well with respectful cats. Kong is still working on house training and will need consistency as he continues to improve. He is very food motivated, which can be a great training tool, though adopters should know that he may investigate trash cans if he smells something tasty inside. Despite being leash trained, Kong often prefers to stay close to his person and does not feel the need to wander far when outside. His low-energy nature means he's perfectly happy with a comfortable lap and a warm blanket rather than a busy lifestyle. Kong’s Ideal Home: Single person or adult couple Someone home most of the time Older, calm children if present A home with another friendly dog is a plus Family committed to continuing house training Plenty of lap time, blankets, and cuddles Ready to Share Your Couch and Bed with a Tiny Best Friend? Kong is a gentle, loving little companion who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. If you're looking for a loyal lap dog who will happily snuggle under the blankets and keep you company, Kong may be your perfect match. Comprehensive details are provided in the dog's description. To ensure a smooth process, please submit a completed application through our website at: crisisdogsnc/dog-adoption/. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
