. ADOPTERS MUST BE LOCATED IN THE DC/MD/N.VA AREA. LITTLE BROTHER Male, neutered ~6 months old Pit Bull Terrier 15 lbs. Microchipped, up-to-date on core vaccines and takes monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention Good with dogs, cats and older kids. Untested with small children Little Brother's life recently turned to heartbreak. This young puppy was found wandering alone through a busy downtown area—scared, confused and trying his best to survive after someone left him behind. Thankfully, his story didn't end there. Despite everything he's been through, Little Brother still greets the world with gentle hope, believing every new person he meets might become his best friend. And honestly? He'd love for that person to be you. Little Brother is the definition of a Velcro puppy. Wherever you are, that's exactly where he wants to be. If you're sitting on the couch, he'll happily climb up beside you. If you're lying down, he'll curl into your side, often tucking his little nose into your neck as if he's giving the sweetest puppy hug imaginable. Being close to his people is his favorite place in the world. He's also a quick learner with an absolutely adorable personality. Watching him bounce around is like watching a baby giraffe figuring out how to use its legs—awkward, goofy, and endlessly entertaining. His playful spirit shines through in everything he does. Food is another great love of his life! The moment he realizes a meal is on the way, he starts doing his happy dance—little hops, excited wiggles, adorable noises, and even a few proud barks as he shows off the voice he's recently discovered. Bully sticks have quickly become his favorite treat, and they're guaranteed to earn you his wholehearted approval. Little Brother has yet to meet a stranger. He's wonderfully social with both people and other animals and approaches everyone with curiosity and optimism. He's still learning that not every dog or cat wants to play, and when another animal tells him "no" with a growl or hiss, he doesn't react with aggression. Instead, he simply looks back at his person with the most confused, slightly heartbroken expression, as if wondering, "If not friend...why friend-shaped?" His gentle nature is impossible not to love. His perfect day is wonderfully simple: spending time with his humans. Whether it's going for a walk (he's still building confidence on leash), playing with his toys, enjoying a tasty snack, or curling up for a long cuddle session, Little Brother is happiest when he's included in whatever you're doing. After such a difficult start in life, Little Brother is ready to leave his days of uncertainty behind and become someone's cherished family member. If you're looking for a loyal shadow, an expert cuddler and a puppy whose sweet heart is every bit as big as his personality, Little Brother is ready to show you just how much love one little dog can give. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
