t comfortable on laps and on couch cushions, cuddled up to her person. She is good with older children, around ages 8 and up, who understand that little dogs cannot play rough. Tori gets along well in her foster home with the other animal residents – a 47 pound,14-year-old dog and two cats that weigh three times as much as she does. It took a few days for her to be less cautious, but they now live in harmony. Tori’s barks are reserved for important occasions! She barks for practical reasons: to let folks know that someone is at the door or that she hears the neighbor’s dog in their back yard. She is a good watchdog in a little package. House training came easily to Tori, once she understood routines. She responds well to a firm “no”, “stay” and “go out?”. She will slip out an open door if you don’t notice her, but STAY works to keep her inside. Tori was found as a stray in a southern state before she came to Nirvana. She was recovering from flea bites and worms, which were immediately addressed. Now she works on eating well and gaining weight. Her bad teeth were taken care of with dental surgery, and she loves her canned food and soft dog treats. For fun, in addition to lounging around, Tori likes to explore fenced in yards and to lay in the grass, even when temperatures are high. She shivered when it was 50 degrees in the morning, so she will need sweaters and jackets when it gets cold. She didn’t like walking on a leash with her little harness the first time we tried it, but now she enjoys going for walks with her foster and the other dog. Tori is actively looking for a permanent person or family. Will it be you?” Tori was found as a stray in a rural area, completely infested in fleas and anemic. She was never reclaimed, so we brought her to safety and will find her the best forever home! Tori is 8 years old, weighs a whole 5 lbs soaking wet, and is mostly toothless. She's one of the sweeter varieties of the chihuahua breed, allowing gentle pets from anyone and content with being picked up and carried around. She shares her foster home with a larger senior female dog and a cat, and she basically ignores them both. Her preferred companion is her human! Tori is sweet, gentle, and kind. She's seeking a quiet retirement home with a person who wants a low-key, low-energy lap dog! To adopt Tori, please apply on our website! .nirvanaanimalrescue/adoption-application Tori's adoption fee is $200, which covers her vaccines, monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention, and microchip. Tori is spayed. Please note we cannot guarantee the age or breed of any of our dogs. All of our dogs are working on their crate and house training. PA Kennel License #18366

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
