three weeks apart! We now know they did a wonderful job managing her behavior because upon her returned she was highly aggressive with all humans and other dogs. She wasn't this way when she left as a baby/teen but maturity and likely the isolation during covid caused a drastic personality change. We were quite shocked when contacted by a relative from out of town of what happened and even more shocked when she arrived snarling and growling in a crate a couple days later. As always, and we truly mean this, we always and forever take our own dogs back no matter what. Her behavior was so extreme that we were worried we might have to make a decision that we didn't want to but she was miserable and surely if she could have talked she'd have told us she just wanted to die and find her parents once again. We reached out to a couple friends and neighbors, of the Rooney Family, who filled us in on her behavior with the Rooney's and how they managed her making sure she was always steps away from other humans and other dogs. We were told she was a joyous happy and perfect dog when alone with them and they dearly loved her. Now here, for about two weeks with no one able to touch her and other dogs kept away until Katie decided to let one of her confident dogs in Clancy's area and there was no issue. Katie continued to take baby steps with Clancy for another 2-3 weeks and then one day Katie appeared with a leash and asked her if she'd like to go for a walk. Clancy bounced over to her (Katie not knowing if she were happy or wanted to take a nice hunk out of her!). Too fearful to hook the leash on Clancy's collar Katie looped it and proceeded to the front lawn for what turned out to be a walk that revealed a very happy Clancy! Upon return they sat on the front porch where Clancy proceeded to jump in her lap and lick her face! Still, Katie wasn't sure if she'd have a face left, but she was ok and so the relationship blossomed and then after a few more days Clancy followed her into the house/pack and then in the back yard with the pack with both of us carefully supervising. More days go by and Clancy decided to leave her grief behind and became content and doing well within the pack and becoming comfortable around the other two humans here who gave her space and time and then just this morning she came up to me, Joye, and nudged my hand to pet her head!!! Obviously, Clancey is not a dog we would ever put out in the community again but we are happy, relieved and confident that she will be able to live out her natural life here with Joyful Rescues as a sanctuary dog! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
