Keanu | 3 years old Shepherd Mix | Big Heart, Bigger Energy Keanu is a handsome sandy-brown shepherd mix with a playful spirit and a whole lot of love to give. At 2 years old and around 60 pounds, he’s still very much a young dog learning the ropes of home life. Keanu is sweet, affectionate, and loves to snuggle just as much as he enjoys chasing a ball or heading out for an adventure. He’s highly motivated by both food and praise, and you can tell he genuinely wants to connect with his people and make them happy. Keanu has a high to very high energy level and will thrive in a home that can provide plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation—think long walks, hikes, and lots of playtime. He especially loves toys (anything he can chew!) and playing fetch. He’s also a fan of car rides and will happily join you on outings. After he’s had a chance to burn off some energy, he’s more than ready to settle in for belly rubs and couch time. As a young rescue dog still learning, Keanu will need continued training and structure. He currently knows “sit,” with other commands like “down,” “stay,” and “drop” in progress. He is about 75% house-trained and gives subtle cues when he needs to go outside, so his adopter will need to stay attentive as he continues to improve. He is not yet crate-trained and may bark or whine when confined, and he can be vocal when left alone. On leash, Keanu is strong and can be quite pully—especially when he spots rabbits or squirrels—so he will benefit from consistent leash training and guidance. Keanu has had mostly neutral to positive interactions with similar-sized dogs but doesn’t always pick up on their cues, and feeding time around other dogs can be challenging due to his enthusiasm. For this reason, he may do best as the only dog in the home or with experienced adopters who can confidently manage a multi-dog household. He has not been tested with children and would likely do best in a home without small kids, as he can be rowdy and exuberant. While his reaction to cats is still unknown, his high prey drive means a cat-free home may be the safest fit. Keanu thrives with structure but may initially resist boundaries, so a patient, consistent adopter will help him feel secure and succeed. He can be a bit nervous at times, but he is not aggressive—just a young dog figuring things out. With the right guidance, Keanu has all the makings of an incredibly loyal, fun, and devoted companion. If you’re looking for an active, affectionate dog who will keep you on your toes and reward you with endless love, Keanu might just be your perfect match. If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. If both you and the foster agree that the dog is a good fit then a meet and greet is scheduled. We require applicants' dogs to meet ours to ensure they get along. We'll ask you to read and sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee to complete the adoption when it comes time. Our adoption fees help cover the costs of saving more lives! A home visit will be scheduled within one week of your new pet going home with you. The adoption fee for this pet is $400. Our adoption fee covers the following: Spay/neuter Microchip DAPP vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog. Rabies vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog. Adopters shall be responsible for all vaccinations after adoption. Please fill out an adoption application by clicking here . Please give us 72 hours to review your application and respond to you. (Remember to check your spam folder for our emails!) We want our pets to go to a lifelong new home, so thank you for your patience during the adoption process! Please email dogsarrcolorado for more information, as we can't accept calls. PLEASE NOTE: The breed listed is the information we've received from the shelter. Shelters usually guess at the breed, so there is no guarantee, as we don't DNA test our foster pets. Here is some interesting info on breed identification: arrcolorado/category/puppy-dog-tips/ Our adoption process is: 1. Fill out our Adoption Application online. We'll contact you within 48 hours to answer any questions you may have about the pet. 2. If the pet looks like a great match, we'll schedule a meet and greet and ask you to fill out our online Adoption Agreement if you'd like to proceed with adopting. Once you've completed the Adoption Agreement and pay the pet's Adoption Fee, you can arrange to pick up your new furry family member!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
