she’s happily embracing retirement and discovering just how wonderful life as a beloved family pet can be. At only 1.5 years old and 14 lbs, she’s finally learning how to be a dog! A DNA test showed her to be Yorkie, Mini Aussie, and several other breeds. Poppy is kennel trained and loves carrying all of her favorite toys into her kennel with her. While she’s still a little cautious around new people and unfamiliar situations, she’s making wonderful progress and just needs a patient family to help her continue building confidence. She is doing an excellent job with potty training and has had no accidents in her kennel or in the house when taken outside regularly. She happily sleeps through the night and loves having access to a securely fenced backyard where she can enjoy her daily zoomies. Walking on a leash is still a new adventure for her, but with a little practice, encouragement, and perhaps another small dog to follow, she’ll catch on quickly. Poppy would do best in a home with smaller dogs, as large dogs can be intimidating for her. She can also be protective of her people. During her adjustment period, she may bark at or act tough toward unfamiliar people, just as many little dogs do. She might even attempt to herd them. With patience, consistency, and understanding during her honeymoon phase, she’ll continue to blossom. Because of her shy and fearful nature, Poppy is looking for a quiet home without children. A physical fenced yard is required. When life gets a little busy, she’s perfectly content relaxing in her kennel and watching the world go by. We had her groomed and she will need it again every so often. Poppy is spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to find the forever family she’s always deserved. Her adoption donation fee is $425. Please apply directly on our website in the dropdown menu at: havenanimalrescuenebraska PLEASE SUBMIT AN APPLICATION AT: havenanimalrescuenebraska/adoption-application We do not have a facility. All of our animals are in volunteer foster homes. Once an application is pre-approved (contingent upon a home check) we will contact applicants that are a good match and set up a time for a meet. All of our animals are spayed/neutered, examined by a vet, up-to-date on vaccinations, on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchipped. We adopt our animals as strictly inside companion pets. We will do a veterinarian reference check and a home safety check. We are located in Omaha, NE and we do not ship our animals. We are all volunteers so please be patient with us. Our requested adoption fees help go towards medical expenses, food, transportation, toys, and other supplies for our animals. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
