with her foster family's resident dog and cats. Whether she is zooming around the yard, carrying her favorite little stick, or squeaking her favorite stuffed toy, Dassa is always ready for fun. Dassa is settling into home life beautifully and is learning all about being a beloved family companion. She has been doing really well with potty training and, so far, has had no accidents in the home. She is also working on crate training. She may whine a little when first going into her crate, but she settles down nicely. She already knows "sit" and is eager to learn, especially when treats are involved. One of Dassa's most adorable features is her lazy eye, and she has the cutest habit of tilting her head whenever she hears an interesting noise. She is as sweet as can be and loves attention from her people. While she enjoys short walks, she benefits even more from mental enrichment like toys, training, and games to keep her busy. Dassa gets along well with other dogs once she has a chance to warm up, and she has done great living with cats. She likes to play with them but is gentle and not aggressive. Because she does have some food guarding, a home with older children would likely be the best fit. A fenced yard would be wonderful for this playful pup, but it is not required as long as she has safe supervision or a tie out while she continues learning. She would also do best with a family where someone is home more often, although she does well in her crate while her foster family is away. She may bark briefly when she first goes into her crate or when she wants to play, but it is short lived. If you are looking for a goofy, affectionate, toy loving puppy who will keep you smiling every day, Dassa might be the perfect addition to your family. If you are interested in Dassa, fill out an application at this link to get the ball rolling - pethavenmn/adopt/adoptable-dogs/dog-adoption-application/ The adoption fee is $550. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
