ars Old · 18 lbs (and working on it) Bubbly, bold, and built for adventure, Brookie is a 13-pound-in-progress Dachshund Chihuahua Mix with a smile that lights up every room, sharing her joy! She is full of herself, expressive, affectionate, and absolutely convinced that she is the most interesting thing happening in any given space. She is usually right. She arrived with a little extra cushion, currently sitting at 20 pounds on a frame that will look and feel its best somewhere around 13 to 15 pounds. This is not a flaw, it is a fitness journey, and Brookie is ready to take it on. She loves to walk with the kind of enthusiasm that makes you want to step up your fitness a bit more. She is looking for a partner who will show up for her daily, and in return, she will show up for you in every way a small, devoted dog possibly can. The transformation that comes with consistent walks and a healthy routine will be one of the most rewarding things you have ever watched happen. Brookie is warm, engaged, and deeply interested in the people she loves. She has the Dachshund's famous loyalty and the Chihuahua's sharp, curious intelligence, which together produce a dog who is always watching, always learning, and always ready to be exactly where you are. The Dachshund side of Brookie comes with one loving heads-up about her back. Dachshunds and their mixes carry that signature long, low frame, which is undeniably adorable and also means their spines appreciate a little extra consideration. Jumping on and off furniture repeatedly adds up over time for this body type, so a set of pet steps or a small ramp next to her favorite sofa or bed is a simple, affordable way to keep her comfortable and protected for years to come. Think of them less as an accessory and more as just part of the furniture, because for a ChiWeenie, they really do become that. It is also worth knowing that Brookie would do best in a home where she can live her daily life on one level, ideally with ground-floor access or an elevator nearby. Long daily stair climbs to an upper floor are harder on her build than they look, and setting her up in a space that works with her body rather than against it is one of the kindest things you can do for her long-term health and happiness. She is ready to find her person, apply now, and get to work on the best chapter of her life. Brookie's adoption fee is $500, which goes directly toward her vetting (vaccines, spay/neuter, heartworm/Ehrlichia/Lyme test, fecal test, pre-op blood work, dental cleaning, and microchip as well as grooming if needed). If you are interested, please fill out the adoption application. For additional information regarding our adoption process, please check our FAQ's Page. All dogs in the care of Get a Life Pet Rescue live in loving foster homes while waiting for their perfect match. They are never kept in cages or crates unless there is a medical reason, and they are treated as family pets throughout their time with us. Our rescues are fed premium-brand holistic wet food diets along with supplements and vitamins tailored to each dog's individual needs. Every dog in our care receives complete quality vetting, including full dental cleaning with pre-op blood work, spay/neuter, vaccines, and grooming. Dogs requiring specialized care are seen by the appropriate specialists, including full cardiac workups, ophthalmologist visits, and biopsy of any suspicious lumps or bumps. Every medical detail is shared transparently with potential adopters. When you adopt from Get a Life Pet Rescue, you become part of our compassionate family, and we are here for you whenever you need us.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
