came into rescue after a rough start — dumped as a stray with a leg injury — but he hasn’t let his past dim his spirit one bit. Hi. I’m Axel. Somewhere between “athlete” and “active natural disaster,” with a strong emphasis on forward momentum and poor braking systems. Let’s get something out of the way immediately: I am not for beginners. I don’t mean that in a scary way. I’m not out here making bad choices with bad intentions. I’m just… a lot. A confident, experienced human who can set boundaries, follow through, and kindly but firmly say “absolutely not” when I’m considering launching myself through drywall in pursuit of a ball? That’s my ideal situation. I’ve got energy. Not normal energy. Not “let’s go for a walk” energy. I’m talking “if you throw a ball, I will simply become velocity” energy. Subtlety? Never heard of her. When I chase something, I commit fully—physically, emotionally, spiritually. If there happens to be furniture, walls, or the general concept of spatial awareness in my path… that sounds like an environmental issue. I currently live with two foster brothers and a foster sister, and I would just like to clarify: I have more energy than all of them combined. It’s not a competition, but if it were, I would be winning aggressively. Play style? Intense. Passionate. Occasionally described as “sir, that’s a lot.” I have one foster brother in particular who matches my level of poor decision-making, and together we engage in what can only be described as full-contact friendship. We’re having a great time. Observers may have concerns. Now—let’s talk about my true personality. I am a lover. Not in a casual way. Not in a “I’ll sit next to you” way. In a “I would like to merge into your physical form and become one entity” way. You sit down? I’m on you. You lie down? Perfect, I’m now a weighted blanket you didn’t ask for but absolutely needed. Personal space is a suggestion, and I have chosen to ignore it. You are my person. Capital P. Where you go, I go. What you do, I supervise. If you were hoping to exist independently… I have some news. Other dogs? Love them. Also copy them. Good habits? I’ll take those. Bad habits? Also mine now. I am what we call influencable. So if your current dog is a model citizen—amazing, I will follow their lead. If not… we’re both about to grow as individuals. Crate? Elite. Wire crate, no problem. I go in, I settle, I reflect on my high-speed life choices. I’m quiet, respectful, and strongly suspected to not redecorate your home while you’re gone, which feels like a win for everyone involved. Car rides? I have some feelings at first. A little anxious, a little unsure, but I settle in and handle it like a functional adult after a brief internal crisis. The vet? Easy. Public outings? Solid. I know how to act like I have manners. I just choose when to apply them. Quick note on my leg: I had a previous injury before coming to MAD, and one of my toes had to be removed. Dramatic backstory, I know. But I’m fully healed now and operating at 100%, which unfortunately means I am back to my regularly scheduled chaos at full capacity. Cats and kids? Still a mystery. I contain multitudes, but we haven’t explored those chapters yet. What I do know is this: I would really love a dog sibling. Someone to run with, wrestle with, make questionable choices with. Preferably someone who won’t immediately file a complaint about my play style. In conclusion: I am fast, affectionate, slightly reckless, deeply loyal, highly impressionable, and fully committed to being involved in every aspect of your life whether you planned for that or not. Adopt me if you’re ready for speed, snuggles, and a dog who will love you like it’s his full-time job—and also treat your house like an obstacle course when a ball is involved. I’ll bring the chaos. And then I’ll sit on you. All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and 6 month subscription. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
