nowhere, and ever since, he’s made it his mission to never be far from people again. He’s a total lapdog who wants to be right next to you, all day, every day, and he lights up when his people come home. He’s a fun little dog. Give him a little stuffed toy and he’ll happily play fetch, bringing it right back and asking you to throw it again over and over. He loves to have a collection of stuffy’s so he has his choice of what to chew on or play with. :) Velcro has the cutest little crooked underbite. We’re not sure if it was natural or from an injury, but he seems to do fine with it. At just over 11 pounds, Velcro is easygoing and sweet. He does well around cats and will even try to play with them. He is OK with other dogs, but honestly, he would prefer to be the only canine in the house. He would prefer not to share his people or his food with another dog lol. He can also be a bit leery of bigger, more boisterous dogs, since he’s small enough to get accidentally stepped on or bowled over during rough play. Velcro is good with nice, gentle children. He likes them, but being a sensitive soul (aka a bit of a wimp), he quickly becomes fearful and could possibly even become nippy with a child that was rough with him. For this reason, we are recommending school-age children at the minimum. He’s not a fan of being left alone and will let you know about it. He rides well in a car and walks well on a leash. House training just takes a little know-how. Velcro does best on a regular potty schedule, leash walks or time in a fenced area. As long as he’s taken out regularly, he does pretty well with keeping his business outside. He’s currently being fostered in a home with a dog door, but for whatever reason he’s afraid to use it. He’s also got a adventurous streak and loves to explore, so he’s happiest and safest on a leash or in a securely fenced yard rather than roaming loose. He does shed a little, so he isn’t considered hypoallergenic like some poodle mixes. He may not need regular grooming, but he will need some brushing. His adoption fee is $200. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
