es. As with any puppy, though, she has quite a bit of youthful energy and a lot to learn about how to live in a home. OTHER PETS: Squeakers was interested in meeting other dogs, but can be anxious if they're too forward or pushy. She would likely do well in a home with a relaxed, well-socialized dog with the patience for a yongster. [Case-By-Case (Must Meet First)] OWNER EXPERIENCE: Squeakers is still currently on a refeeding plan to help her regain some weight, and has some anatomical oddities in her back legs that will likely require a good relationship with a vet throughout her life. She would do best with someone that has an established relationship with a primary vet. [Some Experience] KIDS: Squeakers is very excited to meet new people, and that often presents with her jumping all over someone in an effort to get as close as possible. She has also shown some mild signs of resource guarding--eating faster when she's approached--and will likely do best around older kids that are able to understand how to interact with her and when to let her have her own space. Interactions with minors should be actively supervised for everyone's safety. [13+ (Must Meet First)] ACTIVITY LEVEL: Squeakers is a puppy with quite a bit of energy! She would do well with various kinds of both physical and mental enrichment in order to match her needs. She's a dog that will need both her body and mind to be settled before she's ready to willingly take a break, or she may try to make her own fun. [Good Walking Buddy / Olympic Athlete] VETERINARY CARE: One of the first things you'll notice about Squeakers--after she's done jumping into your lap and getting as close as possible--is her posture and back legs. She doesn't quite fully extend her back legs while standing, and while this could be a result of something genetic or environmental, she will likely need more intensive vet care as she continues to grow. [Above Average] LEVEL OF TRAINING NEEDED: Squeakers is just beginning to learn new skills and fun tricks, and will do best learning with someone who can offer patience while she adjusts. Positive reinforcement will help Squeakers not only learn some fun cues but also help her to feel more comfortable and confident in herself! It will provide a good opportunity for her to bond with her new owner as well. [Intense] GROOMING: Routine brushing will help to minimize shedding in the home. [Minimal]

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
