d love for you to meet Hamburglar. Hamburglar is a 3-year-old, 70-pound German Shepherd mix who is ready to leave his days as a stray behind and find a family of his own. He’s still on the skinny side and would love a home where he can continue gaining weight, building muscle, and enjoying the good life he deserves. His story is where his name comes from. Hamburglar wandered into someone’s kitchen one day, helped himself to the comforts of home, and made it clear he wasn’t planning to leave. Sadly, no one ever came looking for him. Considering how underweight he was, it’s likely he hadn’t been cared for in quite some time. Now, he’s healthy, safe, and ready for his fresh start. Hamburglar is: - 3 years old - Male German Shepherd mix - Great in the car - House and crate trained - Knows “sit” - Neutered, heartworm negative, and current on vaccines He does well with kids but doesn’t always realize just how big he is, so he’d do best with families who are comfortable around large, enthusiastic dogs. He’s currently working on his leash manners and learning that keeping all four paws on the ground is much more polite than jumping up to say hello. He’s a smart boy who enjoys learning and just needs consistency. If you have another dog, Hamburglar would love a playful companion who enjoys running, wrestling, and burning off energy together. His enthusiasm can be a bit much for senior or low-key dogs, so he’s looking for a buddy who matches his playful spirit. He hasn’t been introduced to cats or small dogs yet. Hamburglar has so much love to give. He may have had a rough start, but he hasn’t let it dull his happy, goofy personality. All he’s missing is someone willing to give him the chance he’s been waiting for. Fostered in Camp Hill, PA Could Hamburglar be the missing piece to your family? Apply at .pack9rescue/applications/ LIC # 9736 We are PA Caring for K-9's, an all-breed dog rescue that is solely run by volunteers. Most of our dogs are rescued from high kill shelters in the South. We cannot adopt out dogs to a home with dogs that are not fixed or up to date on shots. If interested in adopting, please submit an application online at .pack9rescue. Our adoption fee for altered dogs is $350 and goes directly to saving the lives of more dogs. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
