Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes (best with small dogs, she is fearful of large dogs) Good with Cats: Not tested, but open to a meet and greet Good with Kids: Not tested, but likely ok with older, calm, respectful kids Energy Level: Low Fence Required: No Dog's Location: Apex, NC Special Notes: Penny is extremely bonded with her sister, Tess and they will need to be adopted together. About Penny’s Breed: Our best guess is that Penny is a Chihuahua mixed breed. Chihuahuas are tiny, expressive companion dogs known for their big personalities, deep loyalty, and strong attachment to their favorite humans. They often bond closely with one or two people, enjoying warmth, cuddles, and staying tucked right by their person’s side. While they can be a bit timid or cautious with new people or environments, they flourish with gentle handling, patience, and consistent reassurance. Their ideal home is one that offers calm routines, soft voices, and a slow, respectful pace. Chihuahuas thrive with families who understand small dog sensitivities, provide plenty of lap time, and keep them safe from rough play or large, overwhelming pets. They do especially well in quieter households, with adults or older children who know how to move gently around tiny dogs. What to Love about Penny: Penny can be very submissive when meeting new people and may crouch down in fear at first, but she’s already improving and learning that gentle humans can be trusted. Penny is extremely bonded to her sister Tess — they are inseparable — and must be adopted together. These two tiny girls spend their days following their foster mom around, curling up together in their crate or on the couch, giving kisses, and burrowing under blankets to stay warm. Penny is still working on her potty training and is a little behind Tess, but she’s trying hard and making progress. Penny and Tess are sweet, low energy companions who thrive in calm homes with soft voices and predictable routines. They do well with small dogs but are intimidated by larger ones, often avoiding them entirely. They haven’t met cats yet but would be open to a slow, gentle introduction. Both girls are crate trained and ride well in the car as long as they’re together. Penny enjoys leash walks with Tess right by her side and is gaining confidence every day! Their ideal home includes either no children or older, respectful children who understand how to move slowly around timid, tiny dogs. Penny is an adorable little lady, and with Tess beside her, you’ll get double the sweetness, double the snuggles, and double the love! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
