If you want to skip straight to the application: .carolinapoodlerescue/application/ Here’s Your Quick Peek: Mocha is a gentle, reserved mixed-breed dog who believes relationships should develop properly — he does not kiss on the first date. At the adoption center, Mocha is quiet and somewhat aloof with strangers. If one of his caregivers is nearby, he’ll often stick close to the person he already knows. If his caregiver leaves the room, Mocha generally goes about his business — usually checking to see whether anyone has dropped something edible — while largely ignoring the potential family who came to meet him. And unfortunately, that has caused him to be overlooked. So we’re telling you ahead of time: please don’t judge Mocha by his interview skills. Give him a little time. Once he knows you — think days rather than minutes — you’ll begin to see the real Mocha. He is calm, polite, affectionate without being demanding, and enjoys quietly being near his people. He’s the kind of dog who follows his person from room to room and settles in nearby. For the right person, he could be an exceptionally easy companion. Must have: A calm, patient home with predictable routines. Exercise: Medium — short walks and relaxed play. Best with: Adults or families with older, respectful kids. Not ideal for: Loud, high‑activity homes. Energy level: Medium — mellow, steady, and sweet‑natured. Mocha is working on house training and is crate trained. He’s good with small dogs and cats, enjoys treats, and likes following his person around once he trusts them. When he came to us, he had some pretty bad skin but good food, regular baths and clean conditions/flea free have made all the difference. His skin issues are resolving well, and he’s feeling much better. About that breed guess: We were told Mocha was a Dachshund mix, but visually, Dachshund is certainly not the first thing most people see. His face, coat, coloring and those wonderful feathered furnishings look much more like a small herding-type dog. Without DNA testing, breed is only our best guess, so for now we’re calling him a Herding Breed/Dachshund mix. He does have the shorter stature and somewhat longer body that could come from Dachshund ancestry, while his coat, build and overall appearance suggest Shepherd, Collie or another herding breed somewhere in the family tree. Basically, he’s a low-riding herding dog. If someone would like to donate a Wisdom Panel DNA test, we would LOVE to solve the mystery! DNA kits are available through our Amazon Wish List. Email infocarolinapoodlerescue and we’ll send you the link. Good with dogs: Yes — especially small, gentle dogs. Good with kids: Older, calm children only. Cats: Yes. Fun fact: Mocha may be reserved with strangers, but apparently nobody ever told his stomach to be shy. Food is serious business to this boy. Bring treats! Potential Adopters Dogs can’t drive - and since we’re busy taking care of them, we can’t either! Please check your potential BFF’s location and make sure you’re comfortable traveling to meet them. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
