mily, and the resident dog in the home wasn’t getting along with her. The family told us, “Emmie is perfect — she definitely wasn’t the problem,” and after just five minutes with her, you’ll understand exactly what they meant. Emmie has done wonderfully with every person she’s met. She’s gentle, patient, and truly enjoys being part of a family. She’s best suited for a home with kids 8 and up, where she can soak up attention without feeling overwhelmed. While she previously lived with other animals, we’ve learned that Emmie does best with dogs her own size and no cats. In the right match, she can relax, decompress, and feel fully secure. One thing Emmie is struggling with here at the shelter is eating. Like many animals who come from loving homes, the sudden change has been hard on her. Her previous family tried everything to make the situation work before making the heartbreaking decision to surrender her, and Emmie is feeling that loss too. We’ve tried countless foods and tricks to help her settle in, but nothing has fully stuck yet. What she does love is human food — she’s a girl with taste. If you’re someone who enjoys cooking, has a soft spot for sensitive souls, and has room in your heart for a dog who truly deserves to be back in a home, Emmie is waiting for you. She’s one of those dogs who is simply too good to be anywhere but with a family who loves her. This pet is Free for Adoption during the month of August as part of Clear the Shelters Please note: All of our animals are spayed/neutered and up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations. Each pet also receives a behavioral assessment to help us better understand the type of home they may thrive in. However, it’s important to remember that the results may not fully reflect an animal’s true personality, as shelter and foster environments can be stressful. If you are interested in meeting any of our animals, we encourage you to first visit our website and submit an adoption application: .acskc/adopt-1 Once your adoption application has been approved, we will call you to set up an appointment to meet with the pet! We welcome adopters from out of state to apply! _ When it comes to our pets, we're all-inclusive! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
