Description

American Staffordshire Terrier Dogs For Adoption in San Antonio, TX, USA

Dog Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier (medium coat). Hello! My name is CHONKY! Through no fault of my own, I am looking for a THIRD chance at my FURR-ever home. I have a wonderful family that my f

oster found for me in the winter of 2024, but due to some very difficult circumstances, they made the hard decision for me to find a home that can give me the love and attention they know I deserve. They kept their promise to me and reached out to my original foster which means a lot because that guy saved my life. I’ll miss my family and best friend RaeRae the cat, but I know this is for the best. That’s where you come in! My full name is CHONKY MCCHONKERTON III ESQ! I am a 5 year old chocolate and cream male staffy mix weighing approximately 80lbs. I’ve been chipped and fixed by ACS and current on my shots. I’m a big ol’ square headed chonky doggy who is super social and affectionate. I was found in October of 2023 running down the center line in traffic on West Ave. When my future foster spotted me he pulled over and I just jumped right in his truck. Its was like a rescue Uber. He got me cleaned up and healthy and we spent the next few months putting on weight, getting my fur thick and learning my commands so I could be the best CHONKSTER anyone could ever meet. I am a medium to low energy dog whose favorite hobby is lounging, scratches and napping. I do enjoy meandering walks, but don’t need to go out for a hike or a super long walk. I am crate trained and house trained. I know how to sit, shake with both hands and will stay. I’m pretty good on the leash, but I don’ like the horses downtown and for some reason the homeless (possible bad experience). I am a FOODIE and am motivated by food and treats and anything you are eating, but I have manners and will not eat until you tell me I can. I am not a fan of pools and water. I’ll tolerate baths, but man you will know I am not happy as I grumble about it and pout. I would do great in a single dog home or with an experienced owner and a very calm large breed dog who will be patient with me the first couple of weeks as I learn the routine. I’m polite to strangers and children, but I’m a little clumsy so bigger kids older than 10 would be a good idea. My best friend in the world is my cat roommate RaeRae, but I am skeptical around all other cats. I love chasing them and scaring them. So, if you already have a cat, I may be a hard pass. I love sunning myself, getting belly rubs, lying on the sofa with the family watching marathons of Law and Order or Game of Thrones, and just following you around the house. I’m very good on truck rides, I just hop right in, and as copilot and am an attentive listener so you can just pour your heart out. If you are having a weepy day and just want to share an ice cream while watching RomComs, I’m pretty good at that too. So, if you have a chonky square headed hole in your heart, I’m the doggo for you! Contact the good people at ACS and my foster and I can meet you at ACS or anywhere around the city for a meet and greet!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
