! I’m so affectionate my foster mama says I’m a borderline pest because of it. I know she don’t really mean it, tho. She loves the dickens out of me! She says I’m a unique cross ‘tween a Southern Belle and a backwoods country gal. I have the poise and beauty of a Belle but also love to get down and dirty! Found a pile of cow poop? Let’s roll, baby! I seem to do well and enjoy going for rides, so we can cruise those back mountain roads in your 4x4 together with the windows down. You drive, I’ll sniff! When I channel my inner Scarlet O’Hare, I'm mostly a fine young lady who minds her tongue (except when I get mad and frankly don’t give a damn and say so—but that doesn’t happen too often—I really only get mad at my foster brother sometimes and have to tell him off). So, I haven’t been very vocal thus far and mama says that’s a good thing ‘cause it’ll make it easier for someone who has neighbors nearby to adopt me. I like other dogs and enjoy a hearty play session or three a day but, even being the young whippersnapper I am, I am not bounce off the wall high energy. Mama says I can call myself crate trained because I put myself in a crate when I feel like chillin’ and when she goes away, she shuts the crate door and comes back later to find that I was a good girl while she was gone. I kind of like to hang out around mama so come in and go in a crate fairly often, unlike my foster brother who will stay outside until them cows comes home (and he don’t even roll in poop; what’s up with that?!) I’ve not had any potty accidents inside either since I got here! However, there is some red, white and blue Rebel in my blood; to this I must confess. My naughty claim to fame is that I like to pilfer soft things...like dirty laundry, blankets, and rolls of toilet paper (and holy moly do I have fun makin’ a mess with those things, yee haw!!!). Maybe one of these days it’ll make mama break out some more soft plushie toys for me -n- Dewey. One can never have too many toys, I always sez. I’ve heard of these things called cats but I don’t know as if I’ve ever seen one myself to have an opinion of them. I guess that’s about it about me except that mama says she thinks I might be a good starter hound. I had to ask her what that meant and she said basically, because hounds aren’t for everyone, and I seem to be such a good and easy one, that even folks with no prior hound experience can likely handle my little speckled butt because I’m such a love bug and seem eager to please (unless there’s toilet paper involved). So if I sound like the almost perfect, not quite an angel, lovely, charming and fun girl you’ve been looking for contact the Highland County Humane Society in Monterey, VA and plan us a meet-n-greet date; I’d love to make your acquaintance (and scope out your house for toilet paper---oops, maybe I shouldn’t say that part)!! Come take me home on some country roads; you won’t be disappointed! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
