- Strand Hardware Store 4th Saturday, Roseville - Pet Food Express Please visit the GCGSR Rescue Page for specific address information. All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location. Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once. Comanche is a 3 1/2 yo black German Shepherd female currently underweight at approx. 65 pounds. She was initially adopted from our organization as a young pup but, unfortunately, found her way homeless again for reasons unknown. Despite her unstable past, she is ready to share her affection and learn how to be the best dog she can be with her new family. Comanche shares her home with her foster canine brother, Valen. Initially, she wanted nothing to do with him and vocalized repeated grumbles to have him keep his distance. Yet after several days and with Valen’s patience, she discovered he is a pretty fun play buddy. The two are well matched in their athleticism which helps Valen tolerate her rough play style that is filled with pushy maneuvers and gruff dialogue. This can be very intimidating for less active or timid dogs. Prompt corrections to tone down her energy are effective in keeping this girl in check where she will immediately halt her play and seek approval from her human for making the right choice. When she’s not in play mode in the back yard, you’ll find her on a mission to capture any and all flying insects buzzing about. She enjoys fetch with a ball but finds those insects harder to resist! In no time, this gal will settle down to bask in the sunshine. Despite her athletic energy, Comanche enjoys laying near her human, often on a dog bed while chewing on her Nyla bone. She does not hesitate to let Valen know it belongs to her, yet appears to enjoy his persistence in stealing it from her. If he’s lucky, he will sneak it away and draw her into a game of “come get it”. When left alone, the two do well with access to a dog door. Upon reuniting, she may show her joy with a mouthy welcome. Thus, she will do best in a home without small children. She enjoys her daily walks where she is learning to tolerate commotion and loud vehicles. When she encounters other dogs, she will express whines or occasional barks but will remain calm in a sit position without protest. With repeated social exposures, she is developing comfort in her surroundings. Comanche is crate trained at night where she sleeps quietly. She rides well in the car and is housebroken. Offer her a glance or words of endearment and she will reward you with her delightful thumpy-wags. With the right guidance, this gal is quickly learning to be a devoted member of the home. Cats and small dogs unknown Understanding Dog Levels Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. Additional Adoption Information For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (Adoption Process) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state. Puppy Requirements We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy or email us at infogcgsr for more information. Thank you for visiting!

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
