Dog Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (medium coat). This dog is currently on our Call-to-Action list due to significant shelter stress that is affecting both his behavior and quality of life. His frustration a

nd overarousal has escalated and when handlers try to take him out of his kennel, he starts grabbing items that come within reach and not letting go - this can include leashes or clothes, but becomes a serious safety concern if he accidentally bites a person. This behavior is making it difficult for both staff and volunteers to safely get him out of his kennel, which significantly limits our ability to provide the exercise, enrichment, and interaction he needs. This type of behavior is generally workable and often does not cause a significant concern in a typical home environment. In the shelter, however, the repeated cycle of kennel confinement, excitement around handling, and increasing frustration makes it extremely difficult to interrupt and improve and becomes a safety concern for shelter handlers. For Tye, this behavior is a direct reflection of how poorly he is coping with stress. We have started Tye on anxiety medication in an effort to reduce his overarousal and frustration, but unfortunately, we have not seen meaningful improvement so far. Tye urgently needs a placement where he can decompress outside of the shelter environment. Tye came into the shelter with another dog and has participated in playgroups with similarly sized dogs while in our care. We are urgently seeking help through rescue, foster, or adoption and would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be able to provide him with an appropriate placement. Our goal is to give Tye every reasonable opportunity to succeed. However, if we are unable to reduce his distress enough to safely meet his basic behavioral and enrichment needs, or find an adopter, foster, or rescue, we may need to consider humane euthanasia based on his declining quality of life and our inability to safely provide appropriate care in the shelter environment. Please let us know as soon as possible if you may be able to help Tye. Adopters: Come in anytime 1pm-5:30pm daily! Or, email animal.careventuracounty.gov for more info! Fosters: Email VCAR.Fosterventuracounty.gov Rescues: Email VCAR.Rescueventuracounty.gov Update 8/31 Unfortunately, this dog is experiencing significant behavioral deterioration and distress in the shelter environment. His behavior has declined to the point that he is unable to be handled or removed from his kennel safely by staff or volunteers. Behavioral medication and modified handling techniques have not resulted in sufficient improvement to allow him to be handled safely. We are unable to adequately provide good welfare within the shelter environment, and despite urgent outreach to fosters and rescues, have been unable to identify an alternative placement. Continued sheltering under these circumstances is an ongoing welfare and safety concern. Humane euthanasia is recommended and scheduled for Tuesday Sept. 1, 2026.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
