ly 50 pounds, and is full grown Nova was seized in a cruelty investigation down south. Her former owner had gotten her as a baby pup and that was where the kindness stopped. He put a chain collar on her and seemingly ignored her for most of the time. The collar, grew too small quite quickly, and when she was taken, it was embedded in her neck and needed surgical removal. She had seemingly been kept outdoors much of the time as her ears are scarred on the tips from fly strike. Her coat is coming back from the dull unkempt place it was upon her rescue, and she is such a good girl about grooming and brushing that we were a little stunned! In face, Nova is a GEM. Regardless of her past trauma, she has decided to live life to the fullest. She is firmly convinced that ALL PEOPLE ARE GOOD. She loves to go for walks (and walks quite nicely on lead), loves to hang out, loves to talk. She's gentle and incredibly smart. Despite all she has been through, this girl never lost faith in people and loves across the board. We do not know if Nova spent any time in the house or lived primarily outside. Her future family should expect that basic training such as a puppy would need, will be necessary. She has traveled by van many miles while in a travel crate, so definitely knows what being crated is (and she didn't freak out or anything!) and what riding in the car is. She will definitely need a course in house training just as you would treat a baby puppy, and it will likely take no time at all to get her on the right track. Honestly, she could already have the idea, we just don't know much about how she lived previously. Nova does not seem reactive to other dogs at all - she is relatively chill around them, but a meet and greet with any resident canines would be required, and she very well may do best with a male companion instead of a female. We think she would be fine with dog savvy kids but since we don't know how she would be with the very young, only kids 8 and over. We do not recommend that she be placed with cats. We haven't seen her with them, but huskies generally do best in feline free homes. Nova will do best with a fenced in yard at her new home. A physical fence (NO INVISIBLE FENCES) is almost always very important for these Houdinis of the dog world, and we would prefer to see her set up for success from the get-go. Nova is a success story in every single way - she has never lost her spark or good nature despite all she has gone through. She is resilient and amazing. We want her to have a home as amazing as she is. If you are interested in Nova, we are taking applications.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
