whatever you’re doing. Have endless energy? GREAT NEWS. So does Spur. In fact, Spur would like to know what you mean by “endless,” because he’s prepared to test that claim. Spur is a young Aussie who was surrendered when his owner was preparing for surgery and realized that keeping up with his energy was simply too much. And we’re going to be very transparent here: Spur is not looking for a quiet retirement buddy. This handsome guy needs an active home that actually wants the brains, energy, enthusiasm, and occasional questionable decision-making that can come with a young Australian Shepherd. His résumé includes: HIGH ENERGY — We cannot emphasize this enough. Hiking? Yes. Long walks? Absolutely. Training? Please! A leisurely stroll around the block followed by 14 hours of watching television? Spur respectfully declines. Dog friendly — He enjoys other dogs and would likely appreciate a canine buddy who can help burn off some of that Aussie fuel. Chicken enthusiast — Unfortunately, not in the wholesome farm-dog way. Spur chases chickens, so we're going to go ahead and remove "poultry guardian" from his list of potential careers. Secure fence required — Spur is an active, curious guy, and we'd prefer his adventures remain on the correct side of the property line. Neighborhood Watch — If someone is in his yard, Spur WILL let you know. Was it necessary to notify you? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But you have been notified. Potty habits — He's been doing really well and isn't having accidents when he's inside, although we wouldn't stamp him "100% potty trained" just yet. His new family should be prepared to continue reinforcing the good habits he's already developing. Counter surfing — Why keep things on the counter if they're not meant to be investigated? Spur would like an answer. Toys — Inside? Fantastic. Outside? Apparently there are far more important things to do. Electronics — Spur once chewed up the TV remote. In his defense, Sonny left it sitting in a chair. Spur maintains that this was an unfortunate breakdown in household remote-storage procedures and accepts limited responsibility. Spur is friendly, smart, energetic, mischievous, and very much a young working-breed dog. He's looking for someone who understands that Aussies aren't just beautiful fluffy dogs—they're intelligent, active dogs who need physical exercise, mental stimulation, training, structure, and things to DO. If you're searching for a calm companion whose favorite activity is watching the world go by from the couch, we have some lovely dogs we'd be delighted to introduce you to. If you're searching for an adventure buddy who might hike five miles, supervise your yard work, alert you to a suspicious leaf, inspect your countertops, wrestle with the dog, and still ask, "Okay, what's next?" Spur would like to see your application They were rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. Meet and greets are by appointment only. An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time. When we do, it will be updated here. This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by clicking donate above. Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free pet insurance. We are not affiliated with MetLife pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect). Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico. While all dogs are picked up during our scheduled times, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
