r. Little Myia is special, sweet girl. A miniature eskie, she is contemplative, watching your every move and with time will come and snuggle with you signaling with her little outreached paw that you can't stop scratching her yet. Her deep brown eyes interested in everything going on in the room. When you lift her up she snuggles against you, her soft white coat is silky, she is light as a feather and she rewards the affection offering the daintiest of eskie kisses! In the right home she could mature to a perfect lapdog or cuddly companion. She does warm to women more than to men at lest initially. She also is a survivor! Her backstory includes that she was loose in a Wisconsin winter for three weeks this past January (2026). She was located and had survived without a visible scratch, but her nervous reactions may have been an outcome of that experience. Her prior owner didn't keep a collar on her so she's been getting used to one and learning to walk on a leash, but, she's nervous and has ability to back out of the collar (or a harness) and has several times with us. She is also so dainty and sleek that more training and the very best, right fit will be needed before taking her out of a fenced in yard for fear she will run. Her walk is the most adorable, typical Eskie trot in the sweetest way! While her tail is down a lot due to her nerves, when it is raised it is the best sign of her happiness! She's shown just a few moments of frisky eskie pounce to play but so far has no interest in it or in any toys. She likes to find a cushion or pillow to perch on and observe or snooze, or maybe chew a bone for a moment. Rides well in the car, quiet and patient in her crate, and adjusts well to your schedule. Myia needed rehoming since her prior owner's health and other issues were leading to her being left more and more in a crate. The best fit for sweet Myia is a quiet household, and neighborhood, that will let her adjust and come out of her shell. She won't come to you yet to put on her leash or be called out of her crate, you have to reach in to get her but she will with time. Continued work on house training will be needed and other dedication to training her and building the best life she deserves! Although she has a sister (same breeder but different litters), suggestion would be not to adopt together. She is too gentle and needs an environment where she doesn't need to fight for attention, food, or safety (sister outweighs her and energy levels do not align!). 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
