r. Meika is a an eskie who is full grown in size with the maturity and energy of a puppy! She has the Eskie intellect! So smart; picks up on her surroundings, and words being used, quickly! She looks and sniffs around, instantly curious and almost immediately becomes your shadow. She is friendly (after introductions) and wants to play and snuggle and get all the pets! She wants desperately to be your best friend, on your lap and in your arms with many kisses (from that silly droopy tongue that hangs to the side!) she doesn't yet know to stay down or not jump at you (with all 24 pounds of pure joy!). Meika would benefit from a fenced in yard to run her zoomies! but has shown that those eskie smarts and agility let her run out zoomies even in your family room. She plays with all the squeaky toys you can offer (but with strong chewing needs them swapped out for bones when she gets in a zone). Her favorite is a squeaky ball. She plays on her own, tossing, jumping, pouncing on the ball. She knows exactly where it has rolled and keenly stretches under a coffee table or around a chair to get it. She is a joy to watch! She will catch the ball when tossed and still needs help learning to give it back. Other favorite hobbies include fly catching, searching the yard for rabbit pellets, and snatching a used tissue - swallowing in a single gulp like she was Buddy the Elf with a cotton ball! Pointing out the need for training, supervision and learning boundaries outside of her crate she's a handful who gets very focused on what her nose is telling her! She doesn't know her own strength and needs obedience training but with the right commitment could learn quickly. While she is less set off by neighborhood sounds and neighbor dogs, she is still triggered by a milder fight or flight which should fade with time and reinforcement. She is eager to please! Rides well in the car, quiet and patient in her crate, and adjusts well to your schedule. Meika needed rehoming since her prior owners health and other issues were leading to her being left more and more in a crate. Sadly, she was neglected more than her sibling eskie; her coat when she left her prior home was stained, dirty and mattered with tangles and burrs. She sat ever so patiently letting them be removed or fur trimmed, bathed and brushed. Some staining remains on her back paws and some hind quarter guard hairs, but her undercoat is thick and pure snowy white! Her tail feathers were trimmed to release thistles but will grow full and it doesn't stop her from doing all the best eskie wagging! She has a lot of eye staining. She needs loving, structure, and ideally a single pet home with all the attention focused on her and and her high, fun, eskie energy! Although she has a sister (same breeder but different litters), suggestion would be NOT to adopt together. She is too dominant over the sister and plays rough /overtakes her. (sister is lighter/smaller than her and energy levels do not align!). For more information please contact Jorie loveandeskienessgmail Rehoming fee applies

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
