Foster Home Feedback ** Older/Considerate Children Only, Resource Guarding 8/26/2026 Foster Home Feedback: Meet Ernie, your future sunshine and certified lover boy! At just a year old, this sweet Shepherd mix is an absolute joy, full of personality, and guaranteed to keep you smiling. Ernie has been one of our easiest foster dogs yet—he’s extremely gentle, kind, and has the most soulful eyes that will melt your heart instantly. Ernie's Highlights: People & Dog Friendly: He is a total lover boy! He has met men, women, and kids at adoption events and was exceptionally gentle with everyone. He doesn't jump—instead, he greets every new friend with the wiggliest butt you've ever seen! Playful & Submissive: He loves other dogs and thrives wrestling and chasing balls with our resident pups. He reads dog cues exceptionally well, takes them like a champ. House & Crate Trained: Potty training is 100% checked off the list, and he keeps a squeaky-clean kennel! He might whine for just a couple of minutes when he goes in for bed or work, but he quickly settles right in. Loves car rides: Ernie loves car rides! He rides like a pro in the car and lays down in the backseat. He never puts up a fuss and is just happy to be by your side. The Ultimate Companion: Ernie is the perfect blend of fun energy and cozy affection—he will happily be your sweet, loyal shadow around the house. Ideal Home: Ernie treasures his toys a bit too much and has shown signs of resource guarding with them. Because of this, he’d do best in a home without young kids, though older/considerate children would be ok! His toy guarding is not difficult to manage with basic habits (like trading him for toys, feeding separately, and supervising high-value items), which are beneficial for any dog in any household. Ernie will happily trade you for a toy! Ernie will absolutely steal your socks and he loves to play keep-away with them. He will also happily follow you room to room to supervise any and all activities. He really is the goofiest boy and has been one of our easiest fosters. We (humans and resident dogs) just adore this sweet boy and hope you take a chance on him. Ernie is so friendly, wildly playful, and bursting with love. There is truly never a dull moment with this happy boy around. Apply to adopt Ernie today and bring home your new best friend! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
