to properly care for him. He’s spent the past two months in his South Carolina foster home learning the ropes of home life, and now he’s ready to make the trip north; he just needs a place to land! Wilson is everything people love about young dogs: playful, curious, affectionate, smart, and full of personality. And those ears! He approaches life with enthusiasm and is always ready for his next adventure. His foster mom describes him as incredibly smart, entertaining, and full of life in the way that only an adolescent pup can be. At 8-9 months old, Wilson has plenty of energy and loves to play, explore, chase balls, solve puzzles, and stay busy. He would thrive with an active family that can provide regular exercise, playtime, and structure. We’d especially love to see him in a home with another young, playful dog who can be his wrestling and running buddy. He enjoys canine companionship and would benefit from having a fun playmate. Wilson has made great progress with his house manners. He is crate trained, keeps his crate clean when his foster family is away, and is doing well with housetraining. He may protest briefly when first crated, but settles once he realizes it’s time to relax. His foster mom puts warmed towels in before he goes to bed right now, and he can’t wait to curl up in them. His leash skills are coming along nicely, too. He can be a little unsure when meeting new dogs and may need a moment to warm up, but he gains confidence quickly and looks to his people for reassurance. Like most adolescent puppies, Wilson is still learning that not everything is a toy. Left to his own devices, he’ll happily investigate coffee tables, towels, clothing, and anything else that catches his attention. Fortunately, he’s very smart, responds well to guidance, and is exactly the age where structure, training, and maturity will make a big difference. And once he’s had his exercise and the zoomies are over, Wilson’s sweet side really shines. ❤️ He loves to snuggle, burrow under blankets, and curl up with his people. For all his energy and mischief, he’s still a young dog who wants to be close to his family and included in everything they do. Wilson is looking for an active family who understands adolescent dogs and is ready to give him the exercise, training, structure, boundaries, and love he needs to become the wonderful adult dog we know he can be. In return, he’ll bring you laughter, adventure, companionship, and endless entertainment. Wilson is ready to come north; he just needs a foster or adopter to bring him to town! Foster-to-adopt is an option, too. DC metro or Charlotte metro area adopters: Apply today! 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
