hua Age: 4 years old Weight: 8 lbs. House-Trained: Almost (about 90% there!) Crate-Trained: Yes Good with Dogs: Yes Good with Cats: Not yet tested Good with Kids: Yes (preferably respectful, calmer kids) Energy Level: Low - Medium Fence Required: Yes (she refuses to walk on a leash, so she will need a fenced yard where she can be let out) Dog's Location: Garner, NC Special Needs: Cookie has an enlarged heart and heart murmur and will need to be on Vetmedin and Enalapril for life. She is responding well to her medications, and her heart has already decreased in size. Because of her underlying heart condition, Cookie's lifespan may be shorter than that of a dog without heart disease, but right now she is doing well and living life to the fullest! Her life-long medication costs per month are about $70-$80. About Cookie’s Breed: Our best guess is that Cookie is a Chihuahua mixed breed. Chihuahuas are bright, affectionate, and deeply people oriented little dogs known for their big personalities in tiny bodies. They often form strong bonds with their humans, love to snuggle, and enjoy being close as much as possible. Despite their small size, they’re confident, expressive, and full of character, making them delightful companions for someone who appreciates a dog with both sweetness and sass. Their ideal home is one that offers companionship, gentleness, and a predictable routine. Chihuahuas thrive with adopters who enjoy having a close, cuddly shadow and understand that their small size makes them more delicate. They do well with calm environments, older or dog savvy children, and friendly dogs who respect their space. A home that can provide warmth, security, and lots of lap time is where a Chihuahua truly shines. What to Love about Cookie: Cookie is the ultimate lap dog—she’s in her foster mom’s lap as this is being typed—and she insists on being held or snuggled by whichever human is available anytime someone sits down! Cookie is a calm, gentle little girl who enjoys a few favorite toys but is mostly a very chill companion. She’s about 90% potty trained, does wonderfully in a crate filled with fluffy blankets, and is quiet as can be when left alone. Because she prefers not to walk on a leash (she simply stands still!), a fenced in yard is ideal. She also loves riding in her puppy stroller down the block and isn’t reactive when people or dogs pass by. Cookie is friendly with everyone she meets and would likely do well with older, dog savvy kids who understand how delicate she is. She gets along with other dogs, will occasionally play with them (especially if squeaky toys are involved) but usually prefers being with her humans or cuddling with other dogs on the couch for an afternoon nap. She loves to play fetch with her coveted squeaky toys, and trust us, it's the cutest thing to witness! She hasn’t met cats yet but is open to a meet and greet. Her energy level is low to medium, and she is happiest simply being close to her people at all times. Her forever family must be committed to her ongoing healthcare. Cookie will remain on lifelong heart medications (Vetmedin and Enalapril) for her enlarged heart and heart murmur. She told us to tell potential adopters that she must sleep in bed with her person—very close! She also eats a mix of dry and wet food due to having only a few teeth left. She is sweet, snuggly, quiet, and incredibly loving. Cookie is truly a special little dog who deserves the very best home! Cookie’s Cute Highlights: • 4 year old, 8 lb merle Chihuahua with a stunning coat and gentle temperament • Ultimate lap dog who insists on being held anytime you sit down • Low to medium energy sweetheart who enjoys a few toys but is mostly calm and cuddly • About 90% potty trained and quiet, cozy, and content in a crate full of blankets • Not a leash walker — prefers a fenced yard and loves riding in her puppy stroller • Great with other dogs, and occasionally plays with them • Likely good with older, dog savvy kids who understand her tiny, delicate size • Hasn’t met cats but is open to meeting them and has shown no reactivity when passing people or dogs • Lifelong medical needs — on Vetmedin and Enalapril for her enlarged heart and murmur (around $70-$80 monthly cost) • Sleeps in bed with her person, eats a soft food combo due to missing teeth, and is simply a doll who deserves the best Comprehensive details are provided in the dog's description. to ensure a smooth process, please submit a completed application through our website at: crisisdogsnc/dog-adoption/. Please note that questions via email or social media channels may not receive a response without a completed application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
