al, please fill out an Adoption Application. If you are only interested in temporarily Fostering one of our rescues, please fill out a Foster Application. Meet Sophie! Below is a new bio for Sophie and is updated as of 9/1/26: Sophie is 36 pounds expected to reach mid 40's (her smom is Carmi and is 42 pounds) she has her brother Pickles. If you are looking for 2 dogs Pickles, sophie, Carmie and Happy are bff's. SHe would be happy in a home with other pets or as a single pet as long as she is adopted by someone who can keep her socialized among other dogs frequently as she loves dog friends. Sophie is such a beautiful shepherd mix rescued from the streets of Tijuana, Mexico when her mama Carmi gave birth to a litter of 7 pups and a good sam took her in and her pups. They seeked assistance for the family of 8 around January and we took the family in to come across to foster in February. Sophie and fam were all fostered by a family in san diego with 4 children ranging 4-12yrs old and couple of large breed dogs which means they had amazing socialization. She came to casa de ARWOB late March as a foster along with some of the sibs and mom and has been here since then. I am her 'foster mom' but realistically I have many foster dogs and cats and I don't do one on one training like a normal foster or an owner can focus on their own dogs. I do have to say she is an amazing teenager! Forget that she is a sweet dog. She loving, intelligent and social. I would say she is almost perfect but there is no such thing as a perfect shepherd or working breed ha ha Sophie is amazing in her crate, house and potty trained. She is wonderful with children, men, woman, cats and all dogs. She has shown no separation anxiety, she has not shown off or on leash reactivity towards people or dogs. She enjoys car rides and walks/hikes (i don't run but he RUNS like a gazzel off leash) so would be a wonderful running companion. The only con I have seen/felt with Sophie is her chewing. She loves to brake tennis balls in pieces so you have to remove them so she doesn't eat it, she is a thief and takes as many cat toys from the floor as she finds, she loves to chew on twigs and sticks typical teen who is chewy but not destructive. Don't forget to inquire on our foster to adopt trails which are 2-4 weeks, submit an adoption to adopt, comment you'd like to foster (we will likely bring it up as well either way) and you can choose to adopt or foster to adopt as long as you have been approved to foster/adopt one of our rescue dogs. Honestly, Sophie doesn't really need a foster trial like her brother Pickles (also still available) would but we are happy to offer it. If you have no problem with virtual home checks and have written landlord approval then please submit an application online Toda at ARWOB or email/text us to schedule a call if you have questions before submitting an application. If you would like to meet one of our animals, PLEASE fill out an adoption application. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
