potted roaming the streets, growing thinner while people tried to catch him and get him somewhere safe. Then one day, something changed. When Animal Control arrived, Lincoln ran toward the officer instead of away, almost as if he finally understood that someone was there to help him. Once he was safe, Lincoln did something that perfectly sums up the kind of dog he is: he offered his paw. Apparently, Lincoln has decided that proper paw shakes are now his signature move. He knows sit, loves giving his paw and high fives, and will happily conduct very important business meetings with anyone willing to participate. Despite everything he went through, Lincoln is an incredibly loving gentle giant. He gets along with both big and small dogs, is food motivated, seems to be potty trained, and walks well on leash. Although "walks" may not be quite the right word. Lincoln prances. Those long Great Dane legs apparently require a little extra flair. Lincoln is understandably underweight after spending so much time on his own, but those days of wondering where his next meal will come from are behind him. Now he's ready to gain some healthy weight, discover ridiculously oversized dog beds, enjoy full food bowls, make dog friends, and learn what it feels like to fall asleep somewhere warm, safe, and loved. Lincoln survived the hardest chapter of his story. Now he's ready for the part where he gets to live. He's looking for a Great Dane-loving family who understands that adopting a Dane means surrendering approximately 87% of your couch, discovering that personal space was merely a suggestion, and sharing your home with a 105+ pound lapdog who firmly believes he fits wherever you do. They were rescued from a shelter in New Mexico. Meet and greets are by appointment only. An approved application is required to schedule a meeting. Check out our events page for upcoming open adoption events! We have no additional back story or update for this dog at this time. When we do, it will be updated here. This is all the information we have currently. Approved Applicants may make the adoption fee payment by using the link in their approval email. Partial adoption fees will not hold a dog. If upon meeting the dog of your choosing at your scheduled pickup time you find that you aren't a good match, your deposit will be fully refunded. Adoption fees are non refundable once a pet is taken home. Adoption fees include vaccines up until time of adoption, microchip, spay/neuter and 1st 30 days of free pet insurance. We are not affiliated with MetLife pet insurance. (you have to sign up for the insurance or it will not go into effect). Adoption fees help cover the medical care of the animals while he or she waits for a new home, as well as food and transportation costs. These fees help to provide care for the other animals in the shelter or rescue group who may have medical bills that are much higher than any possible adoption fee. The money also acts as a donation to help support the organization as a whole, allowing the group to continue its efforts to rescue and rehome pets. The dogs in our care are fostered in Colorado, Texas, and New Mexico. While all dogs are picked up in Colorado, sometimes transport dates change due to unforeseen circumstances delaying pick up. Breed labels are a "best guess" by a shelter veterinarian and cannot be guaranteed.

  1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking… - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
