olene! Sweet Jolene has a huge heart and a zest for life. She is incredibly affectionate, curious, playful, and happiest when she can be near her people. She’s the kind of dog who will happily follow you around the house, supervise whatever you’re doing, and then curl up nearby while you work. At Home Jolene loves being involved in everything her family does. She follows you around the house and is genuinely interested in whatever is happening. She is interested in the family’s dinner but does not try to take food from you. She is house-trained, sleeps quietly through the night, and greets every morning like it’s the most exciting day of her life. She is a wonderful companion and loves simply being with her people. Jolene is also protective of her home and property. When people visit or walk past the house, she can bark loudly and her barking can sound aggressive. With consistent desensitization and training, we believe this behavior could be improved. One thing to be aware of is that she does not love being separated from the family when everyone is outside without her. She may watch from the windows or doors, barking and whining, and she has been known to stand on her hind legs and damage blinds. This is something her future family should be prepared to manage. Activity & Exercise Jolene is an active, high-energy dog who needs both physical exercise and mental stimulation. She loves walks, playing with balls, and tug-of-war. If she doesn’t get enough activity, she may find her own entertainment by chewing on things around the house. She would do best with an active person or family who enjoys spending time outdoors, playing, training, and keeping a smart, energetic dog engaged. Training & Manners Jolene is leash trained and knows basic commands such as sit and shake. She is still very treat-motivated, so she sometimes needs a little snack-based encouragement to show off her skills. She does well away from home and has accompanied us to places such as Home Depot, PetSmart, Home Goods, and friends’ houses. Things Jolene Loves Going for walks Car rides Playing with balls of all kinds Tug-of-war Treats of absolutely every variety Being with her people Following you around the house Getting lots of attention and affection She is also a VERY heavy toy chewer, so sturdy toys are definitely recommended! ❤️ The Best Things About Jolene My favorite thing about Jolene is how genuinely happy she is to see you. She is happiest simply being near her people. She’ll follow you around the house, check out whatever you’re doing, and then curl up beside you while you work. She is sweet, affectionate, playful, house-trained, good on a leash, comfortable in the car, and a wonderful companion. Jolene is looking for an active family who can give her the exercise, enrichment, training, and mental stimulation that a Belgian Malinois needs. In return, you’ll get a joyful, loyal, loving dog who thinks every morning is the best morning ever. Sweet Jolene has so much love to give — she just needs the right home where her big energy can shine. ❤️ Please note that some of our dogs are obtained from shelters, surrendered to our care, or released from breeders. Each animal's bio is based on our experience of the animal within our care, an educated guess based on physical characteristics, temperament and information shared. Each dog receives basic grooming when coming into rescue, but for some dogs they have not received grooming attention until recently and grooming may be required shortly after adoption. This will be at the adopter’s expense, so we encourage you to research the breed and be prepared for grooming expenses. Underdog cannot guarantee hypoallergenic or non-shedding qualities of any dogs in our rescue. Some of the animals come from situations where they are lacking experience in a home and confidence in humans. In turn, they require another companion dog and/or a fenced in yard in their forever home in order for them to feel safe. If you are interested in a particular dog whose bio states those needs and do not currently have them, please understand that your home might not be the right fit. Please use the filter on our Adoptable Dogs page to find the perfect match for your home. ***Be sure to check your spam/junk folder as sometimes our emails end up there*** If you have other questions about me you can email Underdog Rescue at <inquiriesunderdogrescuemn> ADOPTION EVENTS: Adoption events are updated at the top of each dogs animals' as their foster home signs up. Check back for updates on which events they will be attending. If an event is not listed within their bio above, the animal is not planning to attend. Please understand that all of our pets are in volunteer foster homes and sometimes "life" happens and the foster family cannot make it to their scheduled adoption event. If you are traveling from a far distance to meet a specific animal, please understand we cannot guarantee event attendance. We recommend filling out an application and we will set up a private appointment. Private appointments are only scheduled after an application is submitted and approved. ADOPTION PROCEDURE: The first step in our process is to complete an online adoption application on our website: .underdogrescuemn/adoptionprocess/ Note: In most circumstances Underdog Rescue will only adopt within 60 miles of Minneapolis, MN. All of our foster animals can be seen by appointment with an approved adoption application. Contact us at .underdogrescuemn/contact-us/ if you have further questions. FOSTER CARE: All of our animals are fostered in individual homes or doggie daycare facilities. While they are in our care, they are part of our families and given lots of love. We work on training, crate-training and socialization prior to adoption, but each bio is written by the foster as they see them, in their home. Each animal's behavior is evaluated and we have a sense of its temperament and personality, but it cannot be guaranteed. We look for adopters who will give each animal the wonderful life and permanent home that he or she deserves in time and with patience. If you have an interest and ability to be a foster home, please visit our website .underdogrescuemn/foster-applications and fill out a foster application. NUTRITION: Nutrition is vital to the rehabilitation and life-long health of our pets. All of our foster animals are fed a premium diet such as NutriSource, Canidae, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Fromm, Pure Vita, Stella and Chewy's, Primal, or balanced raw diet. All adopters are required to continue providing premium diets for the life of the animal. YOU CAN HELP: Not able to foster or adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring an Underdog. 1. Do your research - find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle - before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you're about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don't have time for potty training and obedience classes you'll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies - It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don't be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet
  4. Start looking - Once you know what you're looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. - Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can't get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.
